Con el fin de describir la dinámica poblacional de la broca, en la Estación Experimental Naranjal (Chinchiná, Caldas), se seleccionaron dos lotes de café Coffea arabica var. Castillo®, uno a libre exposición y otro bajo sombrío, cada uno de una hectárea. A partir de la formación de los primeros frutos, mensualmente en cada lote, en 30 árboles seleccionados aleatoriamente, se determinó la población de broca por árbol, los vuelos de los adultos mediante capturas en 70 trampas de alcohol y se mapeó el movimiento del insecto dentro del lote, durante cuatro años; los datos obtenidos se relacionaron con los eventos climáticos. Se encontró una mayor densidad poblacional de broca en cultivos de café con sombrío durante los eventos El Niño y Neutro, con promedios por árbol de 2.674±213,9 individuos y 1.675±95 individuos de broca, respectivamente, en contraste con 1.326±105,2 y 516±23 a libre exposición para los dos eventos climáticos; durante La Niña, no se observaron diferencias significativas entre los dos sistemas de producción, con bajos niveles de población. Los vuelos de la broca fueron mayores en el lote con sombrío en períodos El Niño, con capturas de 23.645±1.352 adultos en contraste con períodos La Niña, con 997±92 individuos. De acuerdo con los mapas, el movimiento de la broca dentro de los dos sistemas de producción se dio de manera agregada, según la Ley de poder de Taylor, siendo el coeficiente de regresión lineal (ß) mayor que 1, según el estadístico de prueba t, al 5%.
La densidad de siembra, entre las prácticas de manejo del cultivo de café, es uno de los factores más determinantes de la productividad, seguida por la nutrición y la edad. Bajo las condiciones actuales de la caficultura en Colombia, aumentar el promedio de plantas por hectárea para promover una mayor productividad es una meta nacional, no obstante, algunos caficultores han superado la máxima densidad de 10.000 plantas/ha. Con el propósito de conocer la respuesta a esta práctica, en la Estación Experimental La Catalina, ubicada en el municipio de Pereira (Risaralda), entre los años 2015 y 2019, se evaluaron seis densidades de población de tallos por hectárea (tratamientos), en plantas de café variedad Castillo®, bajo tres arreglos espaciales con uno y dos tallos por sitio, en un diseño completamente aleatorio. El análisis de la producción de la primera cosecha y el acumulado de dos, tres y cuatro cosechas, no mostró diferencias estadísticas según prueba F al 5%, al comparar uno y dos tallos por sitio, con las poblaciones conformadas entre 7.407 y 14.815 tallos/ha, 10.000 y 20.000 tallos/ha, 11.111 y 22.222 tallos/ha, respectivamente. De acuerdo con los resultados, en plantaciones de café variedad Castillo®, al superar las 10.000 plantas o tallos/ha, la competencia intraespecífica ocasionada por una excesiva población, compromete la estabilidad de la producción y dificulta el manejo del cultivo. En consecuencia, en variedad Castillo® la mayor densidad de siembra recomendada es de máximo 10.000 plantas o tallos/ha.
La densidad de siembra es la estrategia agronómica más fácil de implementar y de mayor impacto para aumentar tanto la capacidad fotosintética como el número de flores y frutos, porque con un mayor número de plantas se intercepta más luz por superficie de suelo, lo cual se traduce en un incremento de materia seca que favorece la productividad. En el presente Avance Técnico se responden algunas preguntas para facilitar el entendimiento de los conceptos fisiológicos más importantes que respaldan el uso de altas densidades de siembra en el cultivo de café.
Renovar el cultivo de café por medio de zoca o podas es una práctica importante para mantener la productividad de la finca. Planifique oportunamente las labores según los patrones de cosecha de cada zona y promueva la seguridad de los operarios.
Un aspecto importante al momento de definir la densidad de siembra es el crecimiento de las plantas con respecto a su altura. La variedad Castillo® se caracteriza por un crecimiento de porte intermedio diferente de la variedad Caturra de porte bajo. Por estas diferencias, y dada la amplia adopción de la variedad Castillo®, se han generado inquietudes con relación a la densidad de siembra adecuada para esta variedad y la forma de obtener plantaciones de café con alta productividad en los sistemas de producción. En esta publicación se presentan los principales resultados de la evaluación de la densidad de siembra y el arreglo espacial en plantaciones de café variedad Castillo® establecidas con uno y dos tallos por sitio.
