Las enfermedades cardiovasculares (ECV) engloban afectaciones tanto del corazón como del cerebro, siendo el problema subyacente la ateroesclerosis como responsable de las enfermedad coronaria y eventos cerebrovasculares, las ECV constituyen la principal causa de morbi-mortalidad a nivel mundial, en su origen se involucran diversos factores, que van desde el estilo de vida y otros que pueden ser modificables como también aquellos que no pueden modificarse como la edad, herencia, entre otros. Objetivo: Identificar riesgo cardiovascular (RCV) mediante Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC)/ índice cintura-cadera y tablas de Framinghan en empleados de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras-Valle de Sula, (UNAH-VS) de febrero a octubre, 2016. Pacientes y Métodos: Se realizó investigación cuantitativa, alcance descriptivo y diseño no experimental. La población 210 emplea- dos permanentes, muestra 137 empleados. Muestreo probabilístico estratificado según actividad desempeñada en la Institución. La evaluación fue mediante Instrumento creado por OMS: STEP 3; se midió riesgo cardiovascular por Tabla IMC/índice cintura-cadera y Tablas de Framingham. Los datos se analiza- ron mediante paquete estadístico SPSS versión 22. Resultados: La categorización de RCV según IMC/índice cintura-cadera fue: muy leve 11 (8.05%), leve 27 (19.71%), moderado 49 (35.76%), alto 26 (18.97%) y muy alto 24 (17.51%). Según Tablas de Framingham: el riesgo de presentar un evento cardiovascular en los próximos 10 años fue: 131 (95.62%) bajo, 5 (3.65%) moderado, y 1 (0.73%) alto. Conclusión: El riesgo cardiovascular en empleados de UNAH-VS es alto según la categorización IMC/ índice cintura-cadera, la cual estimula a tomar medidas preventivas más temprana- mente, en cambio, según Framinghan el riesgo cardiovascular fue menor, esto debido a que incorpora condiciones como diabetes, hipertensión, fumar, niveles de colesterol en sangre. El gran auge alcanzado por los anticoncepti-vos orales de emergencia (AOE) en los últimos años se ha convertido en un tema de interés social. Objetivo: Evaluar el nivel de conocimiento y las características sociodemográficas de las estudiantes universitarias que utilizan anticonceptivos orales de emergencia. Pacientes y Métodos: Estudio descriptivo-transversal, realizado en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras en el Valle de Sula (UNAH-VS), en el tercer trimestre del año 2014. El muestreo fue por conveniencia, incluyendo a 66 estudiantes que usaban AOE. La información se obtuvo mediante un instrumento de recolección de datos tipo cuestionario. Resultados: Se encontró que el nivel de conocimiento respecto a los AOE era bajo en 32(48.5%) estudiantes. Las características sociodemográficas predominantes en dichas estudiantes fueron: Edad 17 y 20 años 33(50.0%), procedentes del área urbana 51(77.3%), residentes en San Pedro Sula 42(63.6%), ingreso familiar entre Lps. 8,000-16,000 32(48.5%), 41 (62.1%) pertenecía a las carreras de las ciencias sociales y las cien- cias biológicas y de la salud, solteras 55 (83.3%), no trabajaban 48 (72.7%), y forman parte de la religión católica 31 (47.0%). Conclusiones: Aproximadamente la mitad de las estudiantes universitarias que utilizan AOE, lo hacen sin tener conocimientos adecuados respecto al tema, poniendo en riesgo su salud. Prevalence of sickle-cell anemia in two communities Omoa Cortés, during the year 2017. RESUMEN La anemia drepanocítica (AD) es la anemia hemolítica congénita más común en el mundo. La frecuencia del estado de portador de hemoglobina S (AS) abarca un rango que oscila entre 5 y 15% de la población mundial. Objetivo: Identificar la prevalencia de anemia drepanocítica en las comunidades de Masca y Pueblo Nuevo, Omoa Cortés, durante el año 2017. Pacientes y Métodos: Estudio con enfoque cuantitativo, diseño no experimental, longitudinal y alcance descriptivo. El Universo, estuvo constituido por (2545 personas): 1511 de Masca y 1,034 de Pueblo Nuevo. Se calculó muestra probabilística aleatoria, de 369. La primera fase del estudio incluyó la realización de hemograma y metabisulfito de sodio al 2%, la segunda fase consistió en la toma de electroforesis de Hemoglobina a los pacientes con metabisulfito positivo. Las pruebas fueron procesadas en un laboratorio clínico certificado. Los datos fueron analizados con SPSS. Resultados De los 369 participantes: las edades estuvieron comprendidas entre 1-83 años, 250 (67.8%) eran femeninos y 119 (32.2%) masculinos, los valores de hemoglobina estuvieron comprendidos entre 7.85-17.4 g/dl y 20 resultaron con metabisulfito positivo haciendo una prevalencia de 5.4%. En la segunda fase del estudio, se encontró que 13 (65%) de los pacientes eran del sexo femenino, 12 (60%) eran asintomáticos. Se realizó electroforesis de hemoglobina, encontrando, 18 (94.7%) Artículos Originalescon HbAS y 1 (5.3%) paciente con 100% de HbSS. Conclusión: La prevalencia obtenida es similar a otros estudios encontrados, pero cabe recalcar que la raza predominante para heterocigotos fue la mestiza y no la afrodescendiente. La creación de esta carrera ha generado gran interés y expectativas en la sociedad de las regiones norte y occidente del país, ya que para lograr su gestación se contó con el apoyo y participación de diferentes sectores como: La Fundación Sampedrana de la Escuela de Medicina (FUSEMED), las direcciones de los hospitales Dr. Mario Catarino Rivas (HNMCR), Hospital Leonardo Martínez Valenzuela (HLMV) y Organización de Estudiantes de Medicina matriculados en el CURN.
