RESUMO O presente trabalho tem como objetivos o inventário, a caracterização ecológica e a comparação quali-quantitativa da composição florística de praças na cidade de Monteiro no estado da Paraíba. Foram identificadas 529 árvores distribuídas em 11 espécies e nove famílias, predominaram em Monteiro espécies exóticas (81,8%). A espécie de maior freqüência, Ficus benjamina representa 51,2 % dos espécimes inventariados. Na caracterização ecológica foi constatado baixo índice de riqueza e diversidade (H= 1,59), esta baixa diversidade de composição florística da cidade foi confirmada pelo alto índice de Jaccard. A frequência elevada de um pequeno número de espécies combinado com poucos espécimes por área amostrada revela que as áreas verdes públicas avaliadas não estão ecologicamente adequadas. A porcentagem elevada de espécies exóticas evidencia, desinteresse na conservação da flora nativa. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Caatinga, diversidade; espécies exóticas.
