La Biblioteca Nacional de España alberga el manuscrito que contiene las actas de las sesiones de la Academia de los Nocturnos (1591Nocturnos ( -1594. En efecto, el Ms. Res. 32-34 nos permite reconstruir la vida de una academia del Siglo de Oro, y con ello todo un complejo mundo literario donde las relaciones de poder imperantes en la sociedad de entonces se trasladan al seno del cenáculo, de forma que éste se convierte en reflejo de aquéllas. Don Pedro Salvá, que fue propietario de los manuscritos y publicó en 1869 una antología poética extraída de ellos, consideraba que las actas eran el volumen más «precioso» de su biblioteca. Asimismo Ferruccio Blasi, quien dedicó un artículo a la Academia en 1929, aludía al manuscrito denominándolo «rari-ssimo documento». Contamos con ediciones modernas de algunos textos de la Academia a cargo de Salvá (1869), Martí Grajales (1905Grajales ( -1912, y Zabala (1946); aunque la única elaborada con rigor filológico y que da cuenta tanto de los poemas como de los discursos en prosa de todas las sesiones se debe al esfuerzo de J. L. Canet, J. L. Sirera y E. Rodríguez (1988-) 1 . Para adentrarse en el mundo de los nocturnos, es necesario esbozar mí-nimamente la situación sociopolítica en que nació la Academia. El Reino de Valencia en aquellos años era una mínima parte de las posesiones de los Habsburgo de Madrid, quienes a finales del siglo XVI dominaban toda la Península Ibérica, la cuenca occidental del Mediterráneo (Baleares, Sicilia, Cerdeña), algunas plazas italianas (Nápoles, puertos toscanos y ducado de Milán), Tánger, Ceuta, Melilla, Orán, el Franco Condado, los Países Bajos, América central y meridional, Filipinas y todas las colonias portu-1. Cito por esta edición indicando año, volumen y página, o en su caso, por el manuscrito.
El afán por pervivir se contradice con la fragilidad de las obras del hombre y aun con la de su propia especie. De ahí que el sentimiento de la vanitas resulte medular en la reflexión filosófica y poética acerca de la existencia humana y su sentido. En las páginas que siguen he abordado con brevedad uno de los principales símbolos del topos clásico. Se trata de la poetización de las ruinas, una de las más bellas lecturas de la vanidad que la poesía contemporánea ofrece al lector. Unamuno glosó en Del sentimiento trágico de la vida las palabras de Spinoza que aludían al esfuerzo de la especie humana por perdurar:Quiere decirse que tu esencia [...], la mía, la del hombre Spinoza, la del hombre Butler, la del hombre Kant y la de cada hombre que sea hombre, no es sino el conato, el esfuerzo que pone en seguir siendo hombre, en no morir (1993: 12).La perseverancia en la conservación de la vida representa también la lucha constante por hallar respuestas con que llenar la sensación de vacío que azota a la sociedad contemporánea como si de una epidemia se tratara. Luis Antonio de Villena resumió su parecer ante el asunto en el poemario cuyo título simboliza la misma idea a que aludía antes: Huir del invierno (1981), libro sobre el que trataré después. Por su parte César Antonio Molina, remedando al poeta francés Patrice de la Tour du Pin, expresó en su poemario La estancia saqueada (1983) su particular visión del hombre moderno en que se convoca de nuevo el símbolo del frío f vacío'):
Uno de los espacios de sociabilidad más singulares de que tenemos testimonio es el constituido por las academias literarias del Siglo de Oro. Proyectando en su seno las relaciones políticas, sociales, económicas y religiosas de su época, como si se tratara de un pequeño mundo capaz de emular el orden exterior, la academia es también el mejor escaparate de las modas literarias, las polémicas y los avatares de la literatura contemporánea de su tiempo. El caso de los nocturnos es relevante, pues, al conservarse las actas de sus reuniones, sus estatutos y la nómina de sus miembros, es posible explicar la red de relaciones habidas en el seno del cenáculo, así como el poder instructivo que tuvo la academia sobre los académicos, la mayoría de ellos jóvenes imperitos a la sazón. El cenáculo valenciano, en tal contexto, hizo las veces de espacio de sociabilidad tanto como entorno en que comparecían y se relacionaban según su posición fuera de la academia cuanto como medio instructor de asuntos no solo poéticos y lingüísticos, sino también ceremoniales y sociales.
