The detection of feigned cognitive impairment remains difficult and may be even more challenging in certain population groups. Studies on the use of neuropsychological tests in ethnic groups for which they were not designed have shown variations in performance associated with cultural differences. With this background, our group studied a Spanish population by applying commonly used procedures [Victoria Symptom Validity Test (VSVT), Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM), and the b test] in a group with post-concussion syndrome (PCS) (whether litigants or not) and in a group of analog malingerers (AN). These tests appeared to function adequately in this Spanish population, who showed similar performances to results published for North Americans.
We have completed a piece of research into the process of production of speech on the part of students as regards their idea of 'the good student', taking social postmodern theories as a conceptual reference and within the university context. The study tries to show how disciplinary technologies are a major influence in the make-up of particular types of students. It is an exploration of the discourses used by students reflecting their vision of university, teaching and learning. The aim is to understand their reasoning by means of the view they have of academic activity and life. Starting from Michael Foucault's thoughts on power relations in the context of educational practices we present a plan of discourse analysis based on accounts made by the students themselves.
This article includes the assessments made by four counsellors of their work in cultural diversity management in Huelva (Spain). Using interviews and focus groups, together with other qualitative research techniques, we examined the counsellors' intervention models and the relationships they maintain with other members of the educational community to address issues raised by the presence of immigrant students in their respective schools. The results of the experiment emphasize the predominant use of a clinical intervention model, along with limited and isolated collaborations with teachers and other education agents (administrators, social workers, families). However, in recent years, the institutional consolidation of counsellors in schools and their commitment to prevention and collaborative work creates opportunities for a new, more participatory intervention model that would better manage cultural diversity.
