Heterotopic ossification results from the formation of bone tissue in an atypical location, specifically in soft tissues surrounding the joints without dependence on skeletal bones. It occurs mostly in the hip joint and in patients with prolonged hospital stay, severe central or peripheral neurological damage, extensive burns, severe musculoskeletal trauma or joint replacement surgeries. We present the case of a patient with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection and massive heterotopic ossifications in both coxofemoral joints that caused compression of both sciatic nerves and joint blockage.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
