A arborização constitui elemento de suma importância para a obtenção de níveis satisfatórios de qualidade de vida. No entanto, poucas cidades brasileiras possuem planejamento efetivo para arborização de suas vias públicas. O presente trabalho teve como intuito fazer uma avaliação qualitativa da arborização de seis vias públicas de maior fluxo e com maior número de árvores do município de Jacareí – SP. Nas vias analisadas foi amostrada uma população de 295 árvores distribuídas em 28 espécies de 17 famílias. As famílias com maior número de espécies foram Fabaceae (6) e Bignoniaceae (5). Árvores de grande porte corresponderam a 70% das espécies, sendo que as mais abundantes foram: Tipuana tipu (tipuana); Anadenanthera colubrina (angico); Caesalpinia peltophoroides (sibipiruna) e Magnolia grandiflora (magnólia). Constatou-se que o principal tipo de poda realizado foi o de levantamento em função do conflito com a rede elétrica. Em relação ao porte das espécies e largura de calçadas, pode-se considerar que a arborização nas vias analisadas está de acordo com as normas técnicas, com poucas árvores (quatro de um total de 295) em local inadequado. Contudo, considera-se que são indispensáveis o planejamento da arborização urbana e a realização de um programa sistemático de podas entre a Prefeitura e a concessionária de energia local, definindo assim critérios e técnicas adequadas para a realização de plantios e manutenções.
