This work aimed to quantify and relate goat milk production and the Normalized Difference of Vegetation Index of the semiarid Chaco forest and the monthly average precipitation along the 2016-2018 period. The work was carried out in El Polear, in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Even though the NDVI of the forest and its lower strata biomass productivity were affected by drought, its milk production curve remained unaffected. This may be due to the forest stability resulting from the deep rooted trees that includes, to the strategic displacement of the phenophase in its lower strata (broadleaves, herbaceous) in drought seasons and the adaptation to the changes in the goat diet selectivity before forage fluctuations. Winter NDVI peaks should be considered for new lines of research on their contribution to the energetic reserves of the goat component at the beginning of winter. Significant straight relationships (p<0.05) were found between the average goat milk production and the average monthly precipitation (r=0.64) as well as the NDVI and the semiarid Chaco forest (r=0.59). The resulting linear models involving goat milk production with both precipitation and NDVI had moderate and significant (p<0.05) explaining power (R2=0.41) and (R2=0.35), respectively. These models make the seasonal goat milk production predictable and the planning and the making decision process of both producers and the agroindustry easier.
According to the REDD + Program, it is necessary to monitor, quantify and report the forest system status of protected areas. Having this in mind the objective of this work is to delimit the growing seasons of Chaco Semi-arid Forest (FCHS) in Copo National Park (CNP), Santiago del Estero, Argentina, in the 2000-2022 period using time series of NDVIMODIS., and to quantify their Seasonally Integrated Aboveground Net Primary Productivity (SI-ANPP), its trend, and Rain Use Efficiency (RUE), and relate them to integrated seasonal rainfall (SR). The NDVIMODIS time series and the 0.5 NDVIRATIO thresholds made it possible to delimit the growth season, and quantify the SI-ANPP of FCHS with high efficiency. Significant differences were found (T = -3.49; p = 0.0006) in the SI-ANPP of FCHS. The SI-ANPP evidences high sensitivity to negative anomalies of seasonal rainfalls. The nonlinear regression model obtained (R2 = 0.73; p < 0.0001) provides unedited information at the local level on the efficiency of the SI-ANPP in terms of the SR. Seasonal rainfall >700 mm could be considered a threshold (or boundary) in the efficient water use of FCHS. The large positive trend of SI-ANPP of the FCHS CNP in the period 2000-2022 (slope = 462.43; T = 25.64; p <0.0001) evidenced the high stability of the forest system.
The results obtained reaffirm the importance of creating legally protected areas, such as national parks, for the preservation of forest systems in the region.
The objectives of this work were: to delimit the growing seasons of the M. maximus pastoral systems in El 14 establishment, Departamento Moreno, Santiago del Estero, Argentina, in the 2000-2021 period using time series of NDVIMODIS and threshold 0.5 NDVIRATIO; to quantify their aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and their responses to seasonal rainfall anomalies; to quantify the rain use efficiency (RUE), relate it to seasonal rainfall and determine its trend in the period. Growing seasons (GS) start in November and end in May. Significant differences were found in the ANPP of GS with anomalies positive and negative of seasonal rainfall. ANPP recovers after GS with negative rainfall anomalies, evidencing their resilience capacity after extreme weather events. The RUE had a high negative trend in the period. Significant differences were found in the RUE and seasonal rainfall. Most of RUE are related to the normal range of rainfall for the study area. In turn, growing season with lowest RUE were related to rainfall ≥ 700 mm. Seasonal rainfall of 700 mm could be considered the threshold in the loss of water of pastoral systems. Anthropic activities like deforestation and livestock, added to shifts in seasonal storm in intensity/magnitude, number of rainy, timing and frequency, they would contribute to the loss of large amounts of water by surface runoff in the study area. The local information obtained enables the implementation of appropriate management strategies in order to mitigate extreme climatic adversities.
