En el estudio de la memoria escrita de las migraciones históricas a América desde el continente europeo en la época contemporánea, dos géneros discursivos sobresalen por su valor heurístico: las correspondencias y las historias de vida. Las investigaciones sobre ambos géneros promovidas desde el Centro de Estudios de la Emigración Castellana y Leonesa han pretendido enlazar con una larga tradición que no ha cesado de ramificarse. A partir de consideraciones sobre trabajos realizados o proyectados por el Centro, en una perspectiva comparada con los del entorno euroamericano, este artículo expone reflexiones y avanza propuestas para afrontar los retos del presente.
Escribir cartas y escribir sobre la propia vida ¿son prácticas culturales diferentes con aspectos en común o son formas discursivas distintas de una misma práctica cultural? Los estudiosos de lo autobiográfico no son unánimes al respecto. Dependiendo de tradiciones disciplinares, orientaciones teóricas, o simplemente elecciones prácticas, encontramos a quienes engloban ambas en una misma categoría (la “écriture de soi” de Foucault es un buen ejemplo), los que defienden una relación de inclusión (de algunas formas epistolares en la escritura autobiográfica, normalmente) y quienes no establecen ningún tipo de relación y se ocupan solo de cartas o solo de autobiografías. Una muestra comparativa entre los epistolarios y las narraciones de vida que participaron en los premios Memoria de la Emigración de Castilla y León sustenta la base empírica del estudio, en cuanto el recurso a las teorías “clásicas” de los géneros discursivos (Volóshinov, Bajtín) puede iluminar esta cuestión en tres sentidos al menos. Primeramente, porque una perspectiva discursiva nos permiten comprobar cómo ambas prácticas de cultura escrita conectan el mundo de la vida y el del lenguaje (la realidad social y los discursos); en segundo lugar porque la categorización y valoración de los géneros discursivos es también una actividad social con incidencia en los procesos de producción, circulación e interpretación de los textos; finalmente, porque la propuesta bajtiniana de diferenciar géneros primarios y secundarios ofrece ventajas analíticas que merece la pena explorar.
