Abstract:The current global energy crisis has generated growing interest in looking for alternatives to traditional fossil fuels, presenting lignocellulosic materials as a promising resource for sustainable energy production. In this paper, the calorific values and chemical composition of the trunks, branches, twigs and leaves of five timber species of the semi-arid land of Mexico (Helietta parvifolia (Gray) Benth., Ebenopsis ebano (Berl.) Barneby, Acacia berlandieri (Benth.), Havardia pallens (Benth.) Britton & Rose and Acacia wrightii (Benth.)) were determined according to international standards. The results highlighted the calorific value ranges of 17.56 to 18.61 MJ kg´1 in trunks, 17.15 to 18.45 MJ kg´1 in branches, 17.29 to 17.92 MJ kg´1 in twigs, and 17.35to 19.36 MJ kg´1 in leaves. The pH presented an acidic trend (3.95-5.64). The content of mineral elements varied in trunks (1.09%-2.29%), branches (0.86%-2.75%), twigs (4.26%-6.76%) and leaves (5.77%-11.79%), showing the higher proportion in Ca (57.03%-95.53%), followed by K (0.95%-19.21%) and Mg (0.88%-13.47%). The highest amount of extractives was obtained in the methanolic solvent (3.96%-17.03%). The lignin recorded values of 28.78%-35.84% for trunks, 17.14%-31.39% for branches and 20.61%-29.92% for twigs. Lignin showed a moderately strong correlation (r = 0.66) with calorific value, but the best mathematical model was registered with the calorific value depending on the pH and lignin (R 2 = 58.86%).

BackgroundThe need for energy sources with low greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable production encourages the search for alternative biomass sources. However, the use of biomass fuels faces the problem of storage, transport and lower energy densities. Low-density values can negatively affect energy density, leading to an increase in transportation and storage costs. Use of pellets as alternative biomass source is a way to reduce the volume of biomass by densification, which improves their energy quality. They are produced by diverse biomass resources and mainly from wood materials. In all cases, it is important to evaluate the fuel characteristics, to determine their suitability on the heating system and handling properties.MethodsThe present study determines and compares data from proximate analysis, calorific values, physical and mechanical properties of wood pellets produced from the common tropical species Acacia wrightii, Ebenopsis ebano and Havardia pallens. Data were obtained from pellets produced from each species chips collected from an experimental plantation and analyzed through ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis test at 0.05 significance level.ResultsThe results of diameter, length and length/diameter ratio didn’t show statistical differences (p > 0.05) among species. Acacia wrightii showed the highest density (1.2 g/cm3). Values on weight retained and compression test showed statistical differences (p = 0.05) among species. Havardia pallens was more resistant to compression strength than A. wrightii and Ebenopsis ebano. Statistical differences (p < 0.01) were also observed for the volatile matter and calorific value. E. ebano has the lowest volatile matter (72%), highest calorific value (19.6 MJ/kg) as well as the fixed carbon (21%).DiscussionThe pellets of the species studied have a high energy density, which makes them suitable for both commercial and industrial heating applications.A pellet with low compression resistance tends to disintegrate easily, due to moisture adsorption. The percentages obtained for the resistance index were higher than 97.5%, showing that the pellets studied are high-quality biofuels. Proximate analysis values also indicate good combustion parameters. Pellets of Acacia wrightii and Ebenopsis ebano are the more favorable raw material sources for energy purposes because of their high density, calorific value, low ash content and they also met majority of the international quality parameters.

Se realizó un análisis para determinar los principales componentes químicos de la madera decinco especies de pino procedentes del municipio de Morelia, Michoacán. Las especies estudiadasfueron Pinus leiophylla, P. michoacana var. cornuta, P. montezumae, P. oocarpa y P. teocote. En esteestudio se determinó en la madera de cada especie el pH, las cenizas, el análisis de las cenizas, lassustancias extraíbles, la holocelulosa, la lignina y los taninos. Los resultados encontrados fueron: pHde 4,0 a 4,4; 0,3% de cenizas, con mayor concentración de calcio, potasio y magnesio, 17,9% a 25,4%de solubilidad en sosa; 7,6% a 8,2% de extraíbles totales, en la extracción secuencial, la mayor solubilidadse obtuvo con agua caliente, seguido en proporciones similares con ciclohexano, acetona y metanol;68,1% a 74,7% de holocelulosa, 24,0% a 28,5% de lignina y 0,07% a 0,12% para taninos. Lasolubilidad de la madera para las extracciones siguió la secuencia agua > ciclohexano > acetona >metanol. El pH, la solubilidad a la sosa, la holocelulosa y la lignina presentaron una variación estadísticasignificativa (P < 0,05) entre especies.

This study describes the exploitation of wood waste (Pinus spp.) in the form of sawdust and shavings generated during the production of furniture and artisanal items in a community in the state of Michoacán, western Mexico. A process is described to densifying this raw material, to produce solid-type biofuel briquettes that can be used to satisfy the need to generate low-power heat for residential sectors. Briquette production involved six stages: (a) gathering samples of sawdust and shavings from artisanal workshops in the community; (b) proximal characterization of the samples; (c) elaborating the briquettes; (d) physicochemical characterization of the briquettes; (e) evaluation of the physical-thermal combustion of the briquettes; and (f) an economic evaluation of briquette production to determine viability. Finally, we performed a comparative analysis of the energy, economic, and environmental indicators of the briquettes produced and conventional pine and oak firewood (Pinus spp., Quercus spp.) in the study community. The results show the viability of using biomass residues to make briquettes, which are efficient, economic and easy to make and use.

Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) is an invasive weed that causes serious issues for rivers, lakes, and other reservoirs around the world, although it can be an excellent source for bioactive compounds such as phytosterols and some steroids found in many plants. In this study, water hyacinth samples from both Durango and Distrito Federal in Mexico were collected. Ascendant extracts (cyclohexane, hexane, acetone, and methanol) from their leaves, stems, and roots were analyzed. Using boron trifluoride (~10% [~1.3 M] in 1-butanol), all extracts were derivatized. Twenty-four derivatized samples were analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method. Twenty carboxylic acids were found, as well as squalene, which was found in nine extract samples: four cyclohexane extracts, one hexane extract, three acetone extracts, and two methanol extracts. A compound not reported before, -stigmasterol, was identified on three hexane extracts, an acetone extract, and a methalonic extract. Spirostane in acetone root extract and cholestane in cyclohexane stem-leaf extract were also identified.
