A pesquisa segue as linhas de pensamento teórico dos arquitetos Jan Gehl, autor do livro Cities for People (Gehl, 2010) e Edmund N. Bacon, autor do livro Design of Cities (Bacon,1974) em que defendem o espaço público para o usuário. Com base nesse pensamento, esta pesquisa tem como propósito avaliar os espaços públicos, semi-públicos e semi-privados de Brasília com foco no Setor Hospitalar Local Sul (SHLS) que recebe um grande número de usuários em busca de tratamento médico, muitas vezes com dificuldade de locomoção. A partir das condições existentes foram analisados elementos paisagísticos, de urbanização e arquitetônicos que prejudicam a circulação de pedestres e veículos. Com base nessa análise, foram levantados dados quantitativos para posterior qualificação. O processo de análise, se dá à partir do levantamento de dados dos espaços e dos usos, análise das condicionantes existentes e formulação de planilhas com os dados coletados. Ruas, trechos e lados foram analisados a partir de vinte variáveis julgadas como necessárias e suficientes para atingir os objetivos propostos, nas quais, essas expressam as condicionantes do local. Todas variáveis são aspectos negativos, uma vez que quanto maior é esse número, mais inapropriado é seu uso. Diante desses dados coletados foram formuladas planilhas que unem esse somatório, gerando uma matriz em que seus dados foram submetidos à análise de uma estatística descritiva para obtenção de uma distribuição de frequência de ocorrências. A pesquisa inclui o levantamento e análise de leis municipais e do DF relativas à suas calçadas.
