In this study, the use of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) as a tool to guide ornamental stone extraction is investigated. ERT is not conventionally used in highly resistive environments, such as on rock faces, due to the high contact resistances that can impede current injection. Here, the challenges of conducting ERT in such environments are discussed and possible solutions suggested. For this, an example of the application of ERT in a deep and narrow marble quarry is used. The marble deposit is affected by fracturing and karstification. Due to the nature of these features, they present a significant resistivity contrast to the background resistivity of the marble and thus excellent targets to test the application of ERT. Their location was mapped using field observations and complementary ground penetrating radar data. By using an appropriate sensor deployment, a suitable resistivity meter, and advanced data processing routines, the derived 3D resistivity model is in good agreement with the independent observations. This shows that despite the challenges, ERT can be used as a non-invasive tool to obtain information on the stone properties prior to extraction. This will help in guiding quarry operations and will allow for a targeted, safe and efficient extraction of high quality stone, thereby increasing sustainability and economical competitiveness.
This paper introduces a novel electrochemical technology called electrografting (eG™). After describing electrografting the main characteristics, it will be shown that this technology can be successfully applied to the formation of thin, conformal, and uniform seed layers for IC copper interconnects. Seed layer thicknesses down to 10nm thick are deposited on various copper diffusion barrier materials and characterized in terms of sheet resistance, morphology, conformality, adhesion, and gapfilling capability. Initial results pointed out that the technology can be extended to seedless direct filling of interconnect structures. Electrografting FundamentalsElectrografting can be defined as a surface initiated electrochemical process for organic and organometallic film deposition, i.e. a process in which a single, usually Faradaïc, electrochemical reaction is coupled to a range of non-Faradaïc chemical reactions giving rise to the formation of a film. This technology works on any conducting and semi conducting surface. Figure 1 illustrates the main characteristics of electrografting in the example of an organic precursor:• As an electro-initiated reaction, electrografting requires very low amount of electrical current, as shown in the voltammogram of Figure 1a. This constitutes an essential feature of electrografting which induces very little ohmic drop and makes it operative and equally uniform on large substrates with a very wide range of substrate resistivities: PVD TaN, PVD TaN/Ta, ALD TaN,…etc ( Figure 1c); • Most electrografting reactions are based on electrically neutral molecular precursors: they are thus mainly fed by diffusion, and very little by migration, as the precursors are insensitive to local electric fields during the process. A straightforward consequence of this is that electrografting delivers coatings which are intrinsically conformal, even on very demanding surfaces with high aspect ratios ( Figure 1d); • Electrografted reactions are usually linked with intimate surface/molecule charge transfer leading to the formation of strong chemical bonds, which can often survive the overall coupled chemistry and sometimes be detected post-mortem in the electrografted film ( Figure 1b) (1). At a more macroscopic scale, electrografted films usually show very strong adhesion to the substrate on which they have been grafted, in line with the interface management which is forced during the initial charge transfer process.
Authors propose different types of teacher after working with a group of Primary and Secondary teachers in the Science area. In a structuralistic way, differentiating elements were determinated and abehaviour models in teachingllearning tasks» were established with the intention of expliciting theories behind each practice and, therefore, opening the way to its analysis and evolution.
What do teachers of an autonomous region think about their training after an educational change? This work is centred on how the teachers´ thought has evolved. It is focused on experimental science teachers in the Canary Island Autonomous Region (Spain). It is also about the professional development during a time lapse that coincides with different educative laws. In this work, there are two stages. At the first stage, it is designed and elaborated a poll on the teachers´ formation and training, based in an opinion poll in 2002 and 2011. The results are studied and they give us some conclusions which clearly remark what aspect of the teachers´ opinions have changed and which ones still haven´t changed. Then, at a second stage it is compared the results with similar questions that were investigated by some authors in 1988 and 1989 so we can now compare the teachers´ opinion, in different moments, on the most important aspects related to their formation and training.
