This study evaluated the effects of homeopathic treatment on control of Haemonchus contortus infection in sheep. Twenty lambs were randomized to three treatments: treated with the homeopathic medicines, Ferrum phosphoricum, Arsenicum album and Calcarea carbonica; treated with a conventional antihelminthic, doramectin, and an untreated control group. Fecal and blood samples were taken from each animal on days 18, 38 and 68 after start of treatment. A significant reduction in number of H. contortus larvae (p<0.01) was observed for animals in the homeopathic treatment group compared to the control group. Fecal egg counts showed negative correlation between haematocrit and haemoglobin concentrations in the homeopathic treatment group (p<0.01); however, the biochemical and immunological parameters showed better correlation, indicating that the homeopathic medicine improved vital functions. Daily weight gain in the homeopathic treatment group was superior to the control and to the antihelminthic groups, 31 and 6.5%, respectively. The cost benefit analysis confirmed that homeopathy group increases economic trend when compared with the other groups.

Serum haptoglobin concentration and monocyte counts may be potential markers for progression of CLA in sheep.

A freqüência de anticorpos IgG anti-Neospora caninum foi estudada em 415 amostras séricas de cães domiciliados e errantes, procedentes dos municípios baianos de Salvador e Lauro de Freitas, utilizando-se a técnica de imunofluorescência indireta, com ponto de corte igual a 1:50. Anticorpos da classe IgG anti-N. caninum foram detectados em 13,3% (22/165) dos cães domiciliados e em 11,2% (28/250) dos errantes. As freqüências de soropositivos machos e fêmeas foram 8,0% (6/75) e 18,4% (14/76) nos cães domiciliados e 12,6% (17/135) e 9,6% (11/115) nos errantes, respectivamente. Não houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre sexo, idade, raça e a freqüência de soropositividade ao N. caninum dos cães domiciliados e errantes.

Com objetivo de obter valores dos parâmetros do hemograma e de proteína plasmática total, de tartarugas marinhas da espécie Caretta caretta criadas em cativeiro, foram coletados cinco mililitros de sangue através de venopunção do seio venoso cervical dorsal de oito animais daquela espécie, utilizando como anticoagulante a heparina de sódio. Os achados hematológicos mostraram valores médios de eritrócitos de 275.000/µl (±28.030,59), volume globular de 33,12% (±2,35), concentração de hemoglobina de 8,65 g/dl (±0,80), enquanto que os índices hematimétricos encontrados foram de 725 fl (± 131,99) para volume globular médio (VGM), 198,18 pg (± 38,66) para hemoglobina globular média (HGM) e de 26,10% (± 1,21) para concentração de hemoglobina globular média (CHGM). No leucograma a média do número total de leucócitos foi de 3.656/µl (±963,04), e os valores médios relativos da contagem diferencial de leucócitos foram de 59,38% (±16.27) para heterófilos, 10,38% (±6,32) para eosinófilos, 0,13% (±0.35) para basófilos, 29,25% (±17,12) para linfócitos e 0,88% (±2,10) para monócitos, sendo os valores absolutos de 2.156,87/µl (±703,49); 366,88/µl (±216,44); 2,50/µl (±7,07); 1.110,94/µl (±783,61) e 19,06/µl (± 42,34), respectivamente. O valor médio de trombócitos encontrado foi igual a 10.968,13/µl (±3.109,19) e a determinação de proteína total teve uma média de 6,5 g/dl (±0,83). Das variáveis analisadas, a contagem de eritrócitos, o volume globular médio, a hemoglobina globular média e as contagens total e diferencial de leucócitos apresentaram valores diferentes para a espécie em questão, quando comparadas com a literatura consultada.

BackgroundSheep caseous lymphadenitis (CLA), caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis (Cp), is associated with direct economic losses and presents significant zoonotic potential. Despite the importance of the disease, a satisfactory vaccine model has not been developed. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between haptoglobin (Hp) and IgM levels and the clinical progression of CLA in primarily infected sheep and in sheep immunized with Cp- secreted antigens adjuvanted with Quillaja saponaria saponins. These animals were kept with CLA-positive sheep to simulate natural exposure that occurs in field conditions. During the experiment, the Hp and IgM levels were monitored for 21 days, and the development of internal CLA lesions was investigated through necropsies on day182 post-immunization.ResultsPrimarily infected sheep in Group 2 (inoculated with 2x105 Cp virulent strain) had higher Hp values between the first and ninth days post inoculation (PI) than sheep in Group 1 (control; P < 0.05). Immunized animals in Group 3 had significantly higher Hp values between the third and seventh days PI, compared with the control group (P < 0.01). Binary logistic regression (BLR) analysis of primarily infected sheep indicated an association between Hp concentration and CLA clinical progression: animals with high Hp values had 99.9% less risk of having CLA abscesses than animals with low Hp levels (Odds ratio = 0.001, P < 0.05). Both experimental groups had significantly higher IgM titers than the control group around the ninth and eleventh days PI (P < 0.05). The BLR analysis for immunized sheep indicated an association between IgM levels and clinical progression: sheep with high IgM titers had 100.0% less risk of having CLA abscesses than animals with low IgM levels (Odds ratio = 0.000, P < 0.05).ConclusionsResistance to C. pseudotuberculosis infection is supported by the early acute phase response, in which up-regulation of Hp and IgM were predictive of a lower risk of CLA lesion development. Because the immunogen used in this study induced a high production of both Hp and IgM, Q. saponaria saponin should be considered a promising candidate in vaccine formulations against sheep CLA.

Com o objetivo de se obter dados que auxiliem na rotina clínica de tartarugas marinhas, realizou-se o hemograma e a determinação de alguns parâmetros bioquímicos séricos de fêmeas de tartarugas cabeçudas (Caretta caretta) de vida livre (n = 22), animais que desovam no Litoral Norte da Bahia, e em cativeiro (n = 5), animais mantidos no Centro de Visitantes do Projeto Tamar-ICMBio, na Praia do Forte, Brasil. Os valores obtidos para os dois grupos foram comparados, onde se observou diferença estatística significativa (p<0,05) para as contagens relativas e absolutas de eosinófilos e contagem relativa de monócitos dentre as variáveis do hemograma e, para a proteína total, globulina, glicose, colesterol e aspartato aminotransferase. Possivelmente, diferenças nas condições ambientais, nutricionais e reprodutivas, as quais estes animais foram submetidos, influenciaram nos resultados.
