El síndrome de embolia grasa (SEG) es una complicación grave que se presenta por la formación de una embolia grasa (es la obstrucción de flujo de un vaso sanguíneo por material lipídico liberado a partir de fracturas) en pacientes con fracturas de huesos largos de extremidades inferiores, principalmente. Su incidencia real se desconoce, pero por su asociación con los politraumatismos, ocurre con mayor frecuencia en la segunda y tercera década de la vida, siendo más frecuente en hombres que mujeres. Dentro de síntomas más comunes se encuentran la insuficiencia respiratoria, alteraciones neurológicas y petequias. Su diagnóstico es fundamentalmente clínico y su tratamiento se debe centrar en brindar ventilatorio, y mantener volemia adecuada para no empeorar la lesión pulmonar.
