INTRODUCCIÓNEl tema de los flujos densos ha sido analizado desde diferentes disciplinas, entre las que se destacan la geología y la hidráulica. Aún dentro de cada una de ellas existe un amplio espectro de enfoques y definiciones, muchas veces contrapuestos (Mainali, 1994).En términos generales, se aprecia que los enfoques de las dos especialidades mencionadas para el tratamiento de los procesos de transporte por flujos densos y de sus productos han seguido caminos paralelos, encontrándose muy escasos puntos de convergencia (Spalletti, Brea, Spalletti, 2002). Los motivos de ello quizá puedan deberse a que los geólogos hacen hincapié en los productos (sedimentos, depósitos) a los que conducen estos procesos, mientras que los ingenieros han prestado mucha mayor atención a las cuestiones hidrológi-cas y reológicas, es decir al funcionamiento de estos mecanismos de transporte en masa.En efecto, más allá de las investigaciones básicas sobre el tema de los flujos densos, la hidráulica de ríos apunta a las aplicaciones prácticas en el campo de la ingeniería relacionadas con este tipo de fenómenos, las cuales necesitan imperiosamente de la cuantificación de los procesos.Por lo tanto, gran parte de los desarrollos realizados desde la especialidad tratan de explicar el comportamiento de los flujos densos a partir de las fuerzas intervinientes en el proceso, llegando a ecuaciones que permiten a través de su resolución, poner un número a las variables en juego. Resumen:Los flujos densos han sido estudiados desde diferentes disciplinas, como la geología y la hidráulica. En general, en la hidráulica fluvial se apunta a las aplicaciones prácticas en el campo de la ingeniería por lo que es necesaria la cuantificación de los procesos. Para ello, los desarrollos que parten de conocer la física del problema, analizando las fuerzas en juego, y que plantean ecuaciones que resuelven la dinámica, resultan los más adecuados. En ese contexto, han sido desarrolladas expresiones complejas que intentan incluir las variables que afectan el fenómeno a partir del comportamiento reológico de los flujos densos, y que permiten su estudio mediante modelación numérica. En la bibliografía, a partir de enfoques similares, se han desarrollado relaciones para definir los umbrales de las distintas clases de flujos hiperconcentrados. La dificultad para la determinación de los datos básicos en la aplicación de dichos desarrollos, complica el uso de estas herramientas, por lo que en la práctica ingenieril en problemas de flujos densos, en general se utilizan expresiones empíricas. En este trabajo se vuelcan parte de los esfuerzos realizados por investigadores de la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias Hídricas de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral y del Laboratorio de Hidráulica del Instituto Nacional del Agua para estudiar la erosión junto a estribos de puentes aliviadores durante la última década en Argentina. Por una parte, estudios experimentales demostraron que las erosiones locales en estribos de puentes aliviadores, cuando estos son de paredes verticales, dependen tanto de las condiciones iniciales del escurrimiento junto a él, como del proceso de redistribución de caudales que se produce durante su desarrollo. Este último fenómeno pudo ser adecuadamente evaluado mediante la incorporación del ancho del puente como variable fundamental en el análisis, la que caracteriza al proceso en su conjunto como un típico fenómeno en planta Por otro lado, se describieron los procesos de erosión local por efecto de los vórtices de eje horizontal y vertical y de erosión por contracción, en estribos no verticales, de uso frecuente en puentes aliviadores. Mediante estudios en modelos físicos, se analizaron cómo es el flujo líquido y se describe la configuración del lecho tras el pasaje de crecidas, indicando la importancia relativa de los diferentes procesos erosivos.
