Over the last decade, we have witnessed the emergence of an academic debate surrounding the relationship between youth and the 'new media', with a particular emphasis on the social uses of different digital technologies within the sphere of youth activity. A specific area of research has been dedicated to studying the use of digital media in the context of the so-called youth subcultures. With this article we expect to contribute to this ongoing debate, by examining the problem through an analysis of two interconnected case studies: protest rap and illegal graffiti. Both cases may be defined as subcultures, insofar as they are characterized as alternative, subterranean, and to a certain extent, subversive movements. The empirical ground for this discussion is based on several investigations, with a qualitative basis, carried out by the authors in the course of over a decade in Portugal. This extended time frame allowed ample access to a diversified and matured analytical material and enabled a better perspective of the developments and the mutations involving the appropriation of the digital media. Our researches have shown that digital media and technologies have been gradually integrated in these urban youth subcultures, accomplishing several strategic roles. ARTICLE HISTORY
Resumo Este artigo apresenta resultados do primeiro inquérito nacional sobre como crianças (3-8 anos) se relacionam com ecrãs em ambientes familiares, focando-se nas mediações de pais cujos filhos fazem uso da internet. Com base em literatura sobre o tema e em resultados sobre o contexto português, procedeu-se a análises estatísticas de correspondências múltiplas e de clusters que consideraram fatores do lado da criança e do lado dos pais relativamente a mediações ativas e de segurança. Da análise emergiram três tipos de mediadores -implicados, intermitentes e desengajados -cujas características se discutem e se problematizam.Palavras-chave: crianças, famílias, mediação parental, tecnologias digitais.Abstract This article presents results from the first national survey on how children aged 3-8 years old interact with screens in the household, focusing on mediations reported by the parents whose children use the internet. Bearing in mind the literature on the topic and the results on the Portuguese context, we conducted a statistical analysis of multiple correspondences and clusters considering factors related to children and related to parents regarding active and security mediations. Recent years have been fertile in new forms of collective mobilization and activism. In this context the digital media have been assuming a particularly important role. This article is based on an exploratory project, carried out between 2014 and 2015, which sought to study the use of digital media with the forms of activism and public participation of young people in Portugal. Methodologically this project took a qualitative approach, which sought to articulate a research online and off-line. The conclusions presented derive from an analysis of in-depth interviews carried out with activists belonging to different collective actors.
This article aims at understanding the construction of online risk and safety among children addressing the lack of research on children's discourses on their internet experiences. The analysis compares the perceptions of Portuguese children (9-16) based on an open-ended question about online risk from the EU Kids Online survey and two open-ended questions about online safety from a survey of disadvantaged children. Theoretically, the article combines constructionist perspectives on risk with the framework and matrix used in EU Kids Online project. Methodological tools from cognitive sciences and from critical discourse analysis were used to explore children's answers. These theories and methods contributed to capture children's own discourses on online risk and safety, which are complex, often ambivalent and affected by hegemonic public discourses expressing media panics and fears. The analysis made visible how different wordings of questions may lead to different answers and to distinctive children's positions, from apparently excluded of the risk situations to keen advisors of their peers on online safety.
Com o presente artigo pretende-se abordar o modo como a chamada cultura hip-hop, ainda que propagada globalmente, pode ser adoptada e adaptada ao nível local, produzindo desta forma simultaneamente convergência e divergência cultural. O foco desta análise será o percurso e a construção identitária de diversos protagonistas desta cultura, em torno de três dimensões interligadas: a etnicidade, a classe e o género. Para além de uma discussão teórica inicial sobre o modo como estas dimensões têm sido abordadas, pretende-se apresentar igualmente dados empíricos provenientes de uma pesquisa etnográfica realizada em Portugal, mais especificamente na área metropolitana da cidade de Lisboa. As conclusões a que se chegaram, ainda que específicas e contextuais, apresentam afinidades com outras sobre fenómenos idênticos, revelando-se importantes para a compreensão destas práticas e respectivas interpretações em diferentes contextos nacionais.

Resumo Este artigo procura contribuir para o estudo da cidadania digital de jovens através da elaboração de uma tipologia de (não) participação cívica online, que inclui questões relacionadas com a procura de conteúdos informativos e cobertura noticiosa, bem como perceções sobre literacia mediática e digital. A partir de uma análise estatística multivariada aos resultados do inquérito "EU Kids Online" (2017-2019) em três países europeus, foram identificados três perfis cujos atributos nos permitem discutir práticas informais e diferenças no nível e tipo de participação, considerando características individuais e o país de residência.Palavras-chave: crianças e jovens, cidadania digital, participação cívica, literacia mediática/digital.
