Introducción: en Colombia el estudio de la enfermedad crónica (EC) ha sido declarado prioridad de investigación.Objetivo: determinar una metodología para el análisis de la carga financiera atribuible al cuidado familiar de una persona con EC.Material y Métodos: estudio metodológico que propone una forma de análisis de la carga financiera del cuidado familiar de una persona con EC. Se llevó a cabo en cuatro fases: [A] revisión de la literatura. [B] desarrollo de la encuesta “Costo financiero del cuidado de la enfermedad crónica no transmisible”. [C] estructuración de una propuesta de abordaje metodológico para el análisis de la información. [D] afinamiento de la versión definitiva de la metodología diseñada, mediante su aplicación a los resultados de la encuesta de 30 familias colombianas.Resultados: con base en la revisión de la literatura y retomando la información obtenida mediante la aplicación de la encuesta se elaboró una propuesta metodológica para el análisis de la carga financiera familiar atribuible al cuidado de una persona con EC en Colombia que se denominó: CARACOL. Al aplicar la metodología en un piloto conla información de treinta familias se encontró que los gastos que les generaron mayor carga financiera son los relacionados con salud y transporte.Conclusión: la metodología CARACOL es un aporte original que permite analizar la carga financiera atribuible al cuidado familiar de una persona con EC a partir de la variación generada en el consumo real efectivo.
