As variações do nível relativo do mar ocorridas durante o Quaternário foram responsáveis pela atual paisagem das zonas costeiras mundiais. Estas alterações seculares do nível do mar, ora transgressivas ora regressivas, deixaram evidências sedimentológicas, estratigráficas, geomorfológicas e paleontológicas que possibilitam a reconstituição quanto à paleogeografia desses ambientes. O presente estudo se desenvolveu com base na hipótese de que registros de transgressões e regressões marinhas durante o Quaternário tenham sido preservados na região estuarina do Rio Santo Antônio, extremo leste da Ilha do Maranhão. A partir da interpretação geológica, estratigráfica, sedimentológica e geomorfológica de um afloramento de bioclastos contendo conchas de moluscos bivalves e gastrópodes, foi possível verificar a evidência de um paleonível marinho na margem deste rio. O estudo constatou que os bioclastos acumulados foram resultado de uma condição hidrodinâmica pretérita, provavelmente relacionada ao máximo transgressivo holocênico quando ainda não se fazia presente o esporão arenoso (headlandspit) da Praia de Panaquatira. O mapeamento topográfico do local comprovou que os bioclastos estão situados a +3,20 m acima do nível médio do mar. Os resultados obtidos no presente estudo conduziram a uma proposta de reconstituição paleogeográfica da área de estudo.
A praia da Ponta da Areia, localizada na orla oceânica do município de São Luís - Maranhão, é dominada por um regime de macromaré cuja altura alcança 7,5 m (amplitude de 3,75 m) e ondas de 1,5 m. Esta praia, cujo nome deve-se a sua origem e evolução sobre um esporão arenoso (spit) que se prolonga na direção W-SW carregado pela deriva litorânea de sedimentos, está sujeita, como tantas outras praias no litoral norte brasileiro, a processos erosivos costeiros. Em 2011 teve início, e em 2014 o término da construção de um espigão costeiro na praia da Ponta da Areia com o objetivo de conter a erosão costeira. O presente estudo é uma avaliação do comportamento morfodinâmico da praia pós-espigão durante 12 meses nos anos de 2015 e 2016. Para tal foram monitorados mensalmente quatro transectos através da realização de perfis topográficos nos compartimentos litorâneos de entorno do espigão (Setores 1, 2, 3 e 4). Os resultados mostraram que a maior retenção de sedimentos (acresção) ocorreu no setor 3 imediatamente a montante do espigão. Neste setor a linha de costa encontra-se progradante, ou seja, a cada ciclo de maré a praia avança em direção ao centro da Baia de São Marcos. Neste setor, ocorre também o desenvolvimento de um campo de dunas livres e vegetadas, demonstrando que o aumento da praia está propiciando uma maior pista de vento, ampliando o transporte eólico pontualmente neste setor. Os setores oceânicos que se encontram mais distantes da zona de atuação do espigão alternaram-se sazonalmente, demonstrando ainda certa instabilidade do litoral, mostrando que o espigão costeiro vem amenizando pontualmente os processos erosivos atuantes na Praia da Ponta da Areia.
