This paper aims to establish, from the variables incorporated in the bibliography, the ones potentially indicated to explain and rate the rail ridership, considering the characteristics and specificities of the suburban trains and stations of Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area (RJMA) as well as its environment. It will be considered the data of railway branch lines of RJMA and their links, along with the econometric models that will be determined, taking into account the explanatory variables of boarding and landing rates of train stations. Contrary to what is observed in international literature, the HDI (Human Development Index), average income and population variables present low interrelation with the following dependent variables: boarding rate, landing rate and total amount of journeys. The HDI calls our attention because it presents a negative interrelation, which strengths the idea that in Brazil the train offer does not contribute to a human development. The low correlation with the average income and population may explain the low quality of the service and the unattractive image of the train. The variables that present greater explanatory capacity of railway rates were the number of jobs in the area of influence and the numbers of extensions of the train itself. This suggests that in Rio the train plays the role of the transport that will take the employees to their workplaces, highlighting the importance of connectivity to obtain passengers.
PalavrasVol. 8, n. 3, pp. 37-61, Jul. 2014 Fatores intervenientes na relação entre a inclusão social e o trem considerando as favelas e as taxas de embarque observadas nas estações [Commuter train usage considering favelas and station boarding rates] Federal University of Rio de Janeiro -Brazil AbstractReduction of inequality and social exclusion is a global concern. In Brazil, this theme has particular bearing on residents of favelas, which are generally isolated spatially from the rest of the city because of a lack of harmony between the transportation and habitation sectors. A path toward a solution to the problem is to improve accessibility by increasing the use of public transportation, including by the construction of low-cost housing and concentration of activities near commuter train stations. This study examines the factors influencing the relationship between the people who live in favelas and their use of commuter trains. These communities and stations are important trip generation hubs, reinforcing the need for this articulation. The factors that discourage/encourage access to stations indicate how to intervene in the transportation area. These proposals need to be put into effect by inclusive public policies that seek to integrate individuals in the social milieu, by establishing standards of accessibility in different spaces that help harmonize the mobility of favela residents with that of other city dwellers. Journal of Transport Literature, vol. Milovic, 2011).

Abstract: Studies analyzing hotels and their role as trip generation hubs are rare in Brazil and abroad. In this paper, an analysis and compilation of some work linked to the subject, developed in the USA, is carried out, with emphasis on the ITE - Institute of Transportation Engineers - models, to different hotel categories. In the case of Brazil, the studies of Feitosa (2003) and Goldner et al. (2006) assessing trip patterns and also those of Goldner and Inocencio (2007), who analyzed rates and trip generation models to hotels located in Florianopolis. A comparative analysis among the main models is also carried out, aiming at the verification of the adequacy of ITE models to the Brazilian reality. The comparison ratifies the importance to develop models based on data that characterize the specificity of trip generation in the case of Brazil.
