Die Definition der Prager deutschen Literatur als humanistischer Gegenpol zur nationalistischen Provinzliteratur bestimmte lange Zeit die Forschung zur Literatur aus Böhmen und Mähren. Jörg Krappmann legt einen neuen Ansatz vor, der diese Dichotomie durch einen interkulturellen Blick auf die Region als Konstrukt entlarvt. Er zeigt: Der binnendeutsche Kulturtransfer erweist sich als intensiver als bisher angenommen. Dadurch entstehen neue Perspektiven für die Rezeption der ästhetischen Moderne und des Naturalismus als Epochen des Übergangs. Zugleich wird ein Plädoyer für eine Erweiterung des Kanons und eine Revision der Literaturgeschichte gehalten.
Krolop beschrieb in seinem viel, wenn auch nicht in allen Filiationen, beachteten Beitrag auf der Weltfreunde-Konferenz in Liblice das traditionelle "geistige Erbe" der Vätergeneration, mit dem sich "alle intellektuellen Prager Bürgersöhne" in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts auseinandersetzen mussten (Krolop 1967: 48). Die Väter der Prager deutschen Autoren von Fritz Mauthner bis Hans Natonek hielten unter der Parole Deutschtum, Freisinn und Fortschritt an den Idealen des Liberalismus fest, obwohl dessen politische Kraft in der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie längst erlahmt war. Eine der heftigsten Absetzungsbewegungen vom liberalen Gedankengut der Väter vollzog Max Steiner, dessen kulturkritische und philosophische Positionen den Teil der Prager Stadtkultur maßgeblich beeinflussten, den Max Brod als Prager Kreis umriss.Bekannt wurde Max Steiner durch den 1912 von Kurt Hiller herausgegebenen Band Die Welt der Aufklärung, der in den maßgeblichen Zeitschriften des Expressionismus und der künstlerisch-politischen Avantgarde, in der Aktion, im Sturm, im Brenner und sogar in der Fackel lobend besprochen wurde (Steiner 1912; Krappmann 2009: 12ff.). Für das Interesse war zum einen der explosive Inhalt des Buches verantwortlich, zum anderen wohl auch die Umstände seines Erscheinens. Denn der Autor war bereits zwei Jahre zuvor, im Alter von 26 Jahren, am Tag seiner Doktoratsprüfung, aus dem Leben geschieden. Geboren wurde er 1884 in einer deutschjüdischen Prager Kaufmannsfamilie. Von 1890 bis 1895 besuchte er zusammen mit Max Brod die Piaristenschule, später das sogenannte Grabengymnasium. Nach der Matura inskripierte er sich in Berlin für Chemie. Obwohl Steiner in seinem Werk immer wieder auf Beispiele aus der Wissenschaftsgeschichte seines Studienfaches zurückgreift, handelte es sich dabei lediglich um ein Brotstudium. Seine Leidenschaft galt der Philosophie. Das beweist der Nachlaßband ebenso wie seine beiden zu Lebzeiten erschienenen Werke.1905, mit 21 Jahren, veröffentlichte Steiner die Streitschrift Die Rückständigkeit des modernen Freidenkertums, in der auf der Grundlage der Erkenntniskri-
