Background: Conventional implant protocols advocate a two-stage technique with a load-free, submerged healing period. Recent studies suggest that immediate restoration of single implants may be a viable treatment option.

Previous studies have suggested that geriatric assessment units may provide important benefits to the care of elderly persons. In early 1985 we surveyed personnel at 104 (91%) of the existing 114 geriatric assessment units associated with medical schools and Veterans Administration medical centers for information on the units' development and operation. Although almost 80% of the units were hospital based, most (61%) provided care for outpatients. Nearly half (47%) began operation in 1983 or later; of those in existence before 1983, two thirds have increased their capacity since then. The types of personnel and their training differed substantially among units. Fifty percent of the physicians had had no formal training in geriatrics. Of the 104 units, 99 (95%) did routine assessment. The estimated time spent per new patient in outpatient units was 2.7 +/- 2.1 (SD) hours. These data suggest that geriatric assessment units are proliferating rapidly, have differing structures, and consume substantial resources. Further efforts are needed to define their optimal structure, targets, and function.

SummaryThe study was designed to assess the outcome of treatment with permanent dual-chamber pacing of elderly patients with falls, dizziness and syncope associated with the demonstration of a hypersensitive cardioinhibitory reflex. Questionnaires were sent to patients (and their general practitioners) who had been referred to a regional pacing centre with recurrent falls, dizziness or syncope diagnosed as likely to be secondary to cardioinhibitory carotid sinus syndrome or predominantly cardioinhibitory vasovagal syndrome. After pacemaker insertion, 84% of patients had no further syncope over a mean follow-up period of 10 (range 1.5 to 30) months. Minor symptoms persisted in only 40% of all patients. Symptoms were unchanged in 22%. It was concluded that permanent dual-chamber pacing is an effective treatment for elderly patients with recurrent falls, dizziness and syncope in whom a hypersensitive cardioinhibitory reflex is found. Good results were obtained in this group with a simple diagnostic work-up.

Internet-based research is increasingly important for conservation science and has wideranging applications and contexts, including culturomics, illegal wildlife trade, and citizen science. However, online research methods pose a range of ethical and legal challenges. Online data may be protected by copyright, database rights, or contract law. Privacy rights may also restrict the use and access of data, as well as ethical requirements from institutions. Online data have real-world meaning, and the ethical treatment of individuals and communities must not be marginalized when conducting internet-based research. As ethics frameworks originally developed for biomedical applications are inadequate for these methods, we propose that research activities involving the analysis of preexisting online data be treated analogous to offline social science methods, in particular, nondeceptive covert observation. By treating internet users and their data with respect and due consideration, conservationists can uphold the public trust needed to effectively address real-world issues. Yarrowia lipolytica is a metabolic engineering host of growing industrial interest due to its ability to metabolize hydrocarbons, fatty acids, glycerol, and other renewable carbon sources. This dimorphic yeast undergoes a stress-induced transition to a multicellular hyphal state, which can negatively impact biosynthetic activity, reduce oxygen and nutrient mass transfer in cell cultures, and increase culture viscosity.Identifying mutations that prevent the formation of hyphae would help alleviate the bioprocess challenges that they create. To this end, we conducted a genome-wide CRISPR screen to identify genetic knockouts that prevent the transition to hyphal morphology. The screen identified five mutants with a null-hyphal phenotype-ΔRAS2, ΔRHO5, ΔSFL1, ΔSNF2, and ΔPAXIP1. Of these hits, only ΔRAS2 suppressed hyphal formation in an engineered lycopene production strain over a multiday culture. The RAS2 knockout was also the only genetic disruption characterized that did not affect lycopene production, producing more than 5 mg L −1 OD −1 from a heterologous pathway with enhanced carbon flux through the mevalonate pathway.These data suggest that a ΔRAS2 mutant of Y. lipolytica could prove useful in engineering a metabolic engineering host of the production of carotenoids and other biochemicals.

Zebrafish are ideal for experimental studies in the classroom because, in contrast to chicks or mammals, fish embryos are relatively easy and inexpensive to maintain, and embryonic development can be observed with common classroom equipment. The eight student-developed laboratory exercises described here have been used by students in Neuroscience Research at Sidwell Friends School. This course uses zebrafish as a vertebrate model to study genetics, development, behavior, neurobiology, regeneration, learning, and memory. The students develop protocols through collaboration with the teacher and scientists in specific fields. Through individual research, students develop and perform their own experiments, formulate and test hypotheses, learn basic laboratory and microscopy techniques, collect and analyze data, read original scientific literature, and collaborate with prominent zebrafish researchers.
