In de teelt van Phalaenopsis orchideeën wordt belangrijke schade veroorzaakt door zogenaamde 'potwormen', feitelijk muggenlarven van de familie Keroplatidae (langhoornmuggen). Deze larven, welke zich in het substraat bevinden, prederen in eerste instantie op bodemorganismen. Ze veroorzaken echter ook vraatschade aan wortelpunten, wat leidt tot een algehele groeivertraging. Zelfs bij lage aantallen langhoornmug larven-meestal zit er maar één larve in een pot-wordt de schadedrempel al overschreden door het relatief lage aantal wortels van Phalaenopsis. In dit rapport is het onderzoek beschreven naar a) de biologie van langhoornmuggen, met name naar Lyprauta cambria, en b) verschillende manieren om L. cambria te bestrijden, en/of ervoor te zorgen dat de larven minder schade berokkenen aan de wortelpunten van Phalaenopsis.
In dit rapport wordt onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van een 'attract-en kill' strategie voor rouwmuggen (Sciaridae) en oevervliegen (Ephydridae) beschreven. Allereerst is onderzocht welke substraatsamenstellingen het meest of juist het minst aantrekkelijk zijn voor rouwmugvrouwtjes. Vervolgens is op basis van de meest aantrekkelijke substraatsamenstelling een loksubstraat ontwikkeld, welke in combinatie met een gele vangplaat in de praktijk twee keer zoveel rouwmuggen aantrok dan een gele vangplaat alleen, en in kooien het aantal rouwmuggen in het teeltsubstraat van viooltjes kon halveren. Ook bleek de roofkever Dalotia (voorheen Atheta) coriaria te worden aangetrokken door het loksubstraat. Oevervliegen bleken niet te reageren op geuren van substraat of algen. In een kas werd wel een spontane besmetting van oevervliegen met een entomopathogene schimmel ontdekt. De werking van dit Beauveria bassiana isolaat tegen oevervliegen is vergeleken met commerciële entomopathogene schimmels en is vervolgens gebruikt voor de ontwikkeling van een 'attract-en kill' strategie. Experimenten lieten zien dat oevervliegen de dodelijke schimmel kunnen overbrengen vanuit lokbakken met algen waaraan de schimmel is toegevoegd, naar andere algenplekken waar oevervliegen zich ontwikkelen.
Generalistische roofwantsen van de familie Anthocoridae (Orius-soorten) bieden door hun brede prooidieet zeer veel potentie voor bestrijding van diverse plagen. Bovendien kunnen ze preventief worden ingezet door het aanbieden van alternatief voedsel. Dit rapport geeft de resultaten weer van een 3-jarige project waarin onderzocht is 1) in hoeverre een breed plaagcomplex bestreden kan worden met generalisten, 2) of aanvullende bestrijding met specialisten nodig en effectief is, 3) met welke combinaties van generalisten complementaire bestrijding kan worden behaald en 4) wat een goede bijvoerstrategie is voor generalisten in de gewassen gerbera, chrysant en Alstroemeria. In gerbera zijn zeer goede resultaten behaald bij de bestrijding van Echinothrips, Californische trips, kaswittevlieg met Orius laevigatus, Orius majusculus en Orius minutus. Turkse mot werd goed bestreden door O. majusculus en O. minutus. De soorten O. minutus en O. laevigatus vullen elkaar goed aan bij de bestrijding van Californische trips en kaswittevlieg. In chrysant kwam in alle proeven O. leavigatus zeer goed naar voren bij de bestrijding van Californische trips, katoenluis en mineervlieg, maar de bestrijding van mineervlieg was beter bij O. majusculus. Inzet van roofmijten reduceerden de dichtheden van O. laevigatus, waardoor de bestrijding van bladluis minder effectief was. In Alstroemeria werden geen goede resultaten met Orius behaald en is de inzet van spinnen voor de bestrijding van trips verkend.
Spint in komkommer is soms lastig te bestrijden met roofmijten, met name bij schraal weer in het voorjaar. In dit onderzoek is gekeken welke soorten roofmijten de beste bestrijding van spint geven bij lage luchtvochtigheden, in hoeverre generalistische roofmijten de bestrijding van spint met specialistische roofmijten beïnvloeden en welke mogelijkheden er zijn om specialistische roofmijten te ondersteunen met alternatief voedsel. Kasproeven met verschillende luchtvochtigheden in komkommer hebben aangetoond dat lage luchtvochtigheden in principe niet belemmerend hoeven te zijn voor de effectiviteit van de roofmijten Neoseiulus californicus en Phytoseiulus persimilis, maar dat spint zich sneller ontwikkelt bij een lagere luchtvochtigheid dan bij een hogere luchtvochtigheid. Diverse soorten voermijten waren geschikt om N. californicus in het gewas bij te voeren. De generalistische roofmijt Amblyseius swirskii kon de bestrijding van spint met N. californicus ernstig verstoren.
