Mechanical waves, such as ultrasonic waves, have shown promise for use in non-destructive methods used in the evaluation of concrete properties, such as strength and elasticity. However, accurate estimation of the concrete compressive strength is difficult if only the pressure waves (P-waves) are considered, which is common in non-destructive methods. P-waves cannot reflect various factors such as the types of aggregates and cement, the fine aggregate modulus, and the interfacial transition zone, influencing the concrete strength. In this study, shear waves (S-waves) and Rayleigh waves (R-waves) were additionally used to obtain a more accurate prediction of the concrete strength. The velocities of three types of mechanical waves were measured by recent ultrasonic testing methods. Two machine learning models—a support vector machine (SVM) and an artificial neural network (ANN)—were developed within the MATLAB programming environment. Both models were successfully used to model the relationship between the mechanical wave velocities and the concrete compressive strength. The machine learning model that included the P-, S-, and R-wave velocities was more accurate than the model that included only the P-wave velocity.
The static elastic modulus (Ec) and compressive strength (fc) are critical properties of concrete. When determining Ec and fc, concrete cores are collected and subjected to destructive tests. However, destructive tests require certain test permissions and large sample sizes. Hence, it is preferable to predict Ec using the dynamic elastic modulus (Ed), through nondestructive evaluations. A resonance frequency test performed according to ASTM C215-14 and a pressure wave (P-wave) measurement conducted according to ASTM C597M-16 are typically used to determine Ed. Recently, developments in transducers have enabled the measurement of a shear wave (S-wave) velocities in concrete. Although various equations have been proposed for estimating Ec and fc from Ed, their results deviate from experimental values. Thus, it is necessary to obtain a reliable Ed value for accurately predicting Ec and fc. In this study, Ed values were experimentally obtained from P-wave and S-wave velocities in the longitudinal and transverse modes; Ec and fc values were predicted using these Ed values through four machine learning (ML) methods: support vector machine, artificial neural networks, ensembles, and linear regression. Using ML, the prediction accuracy of Ec and fc was improved by 2.5–5% and 7–9%, respectively, compared with the accuracy obtained using classical or normal-regression equations. By combining ML methods, the accuracy of the predicted Ec and fc was improved by 0.5% and 1.5%, respectively, compared with the optimal single variable results.
This paper presents the results of an experimental test conducted on the blast resistance of a steel plate. A supporting steel frame on a concrete foundation was designed for testing a steel plate target against blast loading. A 1220 mm × 2140 mm × 10 mm steel plate was tested and subjected to the explosion of 50 kg of TNT (tri-nitro toluene) at a stand-off distance of 20 m. Data collected from the specimen included the strain and deflection of the steel plate. The test data were analyzed to evaluate the performance of the plate. The test results were compared with the results of Autodyn, which is a finite element method-based commercial software. The analytical results showed minor differences from the test results when the boundary conditions of the steel plate assumed that the upper and lower sides were fixed and the other sides were free.
