Esta reflexão apresenta o sentido ético do sofrimento na relação médico, paciente e estudante, a partir de uma abordagem fenomenológica da ética em Levinas. Descreve também alguns desafios da contemporaneidade nestas relações. O principal desafio do médico é fazer face ao sofrimento do outro pela sensibilidade ética, colocando-o como centro onde planeja seu tratamento. O paciente também é convocado a fazer parte do tratamento, podendo também assumir, em certa medida, a responsabilidade pelo adoecimento, como um modo de contribuir para sair da passividade e tornar mais efetiva a recuperação. Outro desafio é o médico lidar com pacientes que são informados por redes virtuais, como se houvesse uma banalização do saber médico, já que “todos sabem sobre medicina”. Contudo, para além desse equívoco, há o reconhecimento do saber do doente que também pode contribuir para uma nova narrativa de sua doença juntamente com a escuta médica.
