Diversification through agroecological principles may maintain and stabilize yields in an increasingly more unpredictable climate, including market price fluctuations, as well as preserve and enhance the threatened natural resource base and the environment. Based on a participatory interview process this article identifies the barriers encountered by a group of Danish biodynamic farmers striving for self-sufficient farm systems with no or very little dependency on imported materials by developing biologically, economically and socially diverse farms. Through an iterative interview process the study found that barriers outside farm management are hindering the transition toward diverse farming and that a further exploration of the need for and implications of food sovereignty in the Global North might generate the discussions needed to support implementation of more agroecological farming system practises.

This paper provides an introduction to Critical Utopian Action Research (CUAR) as a methodology with a strong emphasis on combining critical analysis, imaginative thinking, and everyday life-based actions toward societal democratization. First, we situate CUAR in the light of current societal frameworks asking: Why the need of CUAR? We then briefly mark theoretical sources of inspiration before focusing on the Future Creating Workshop as a way to elicit what CUAR is from a methodological point of view. We exemplify how the workshop functions before we finally discuss what kind of contributions CUAR might enable in the context of local communities, workplaces, organizations, and broader societal settings.

De senere år har vi set en stigende opmærksomhed mod at fremme samspillet mellem videnskabelig viden og udviklingsprocesser i praksis. Anvendelsesorienteringen er på mange måder positiv, men stiller samtidig fornyede krav til forskningsmiljøerne om at forankre praksissamarbejder videnskabeligt. Med dette mål for øje, introducerer artiklen i et metodologisk perspektiv til fremtidsværkstedet og dets potentialer til at skabe ny forandringsorienteret viden på tværs af praksiserfaringer og videnskabeligt forankrede kvalitetskriterier. Forholdet mellem teoretisk inspiration og metodisk tilgang udfoldes i en tematisk diskussion af, hvordan værkstedets ambitioner om at fremme demokratisk deltagelse, frirum til eksperimentel nytænkning og tættere samspil mellem vidensformer, kan udmøntes på måder, hvor både praksis og den kvalitative forskning stimuleres og udvikles i et forandringsperspektiv.
