Bemisia tabaci resistance evolved differently in each of the three insecticides studied. Imidacloprid resistance seems less established and less persistent than alpha-cypermethrin resistance. The low resistance levels for pirimiphos-methyl suggest absence of cross-resistance with other organophosphates or carbamates used.

The Bergen Ocean Model (BOM), a three‐dimensional physical coastal ocean model, was used for a numerical simulation experiment to investigate short‐term effects of wind‐generated coastal upwelling and downwelling on the dynamics of adjacent large outer and smaller inner fjords. The effect of the real alongshore wind regime on advection for an idealized fjord topography, resembling Masfjorden, western Norway, is used as an example. This modelling exercise is a supplement to, and its predictions support, the various hypotheses investigated in ecosystem simulation studies of the Masfjorden. The model predicts that coastal winds from the north cause upwelling and transport the upper water layer out from the fjords. Winds from the south cause downwelling and transport the upper water layer into the fjords. The transport is rapid and ≈50% of the upper water layer may be replaced within 1–2 days. Implications of these physical processes for the dispersal and retention of planktonic organisms and the early life stages of fish are discussed. If strong southerly winds occur frequently, this will transport planktonic organisms into the fjord and may increase the carrying capacity for planktivorous fish. In contrast, frequent strong northerly winds may reduce the abundance of planktonic organisms, including the early life stages of marine fish, and thus possibly reduce recruitment to fjord fish populations. Frequent shifts between southerly and northerly winds would cause an exchange of early life stages between neighbouring fjords and thus enhance genetic exchange.

We investigated the molecular diversity of the major agricultural pest Bemisia tabaci and of its associated secondary endosymbionts in Greece. Analyzing mitochondrial DNA, we found that the Q1 (=Q west) is predominant. We used eight microsatellite polymorphic markers to study the genetic structure of 37 populations from mainland and insular Greece, collected on different host species from outdoor and protected crops as well as from non-cultivated plants. In some cases, gene flow was found to be low even between populations separated by just a few kilometres. Bayesian analysis identified two main genetic groups, the first encompassing populations from south Crete and the second composed of populations from north Crete, two other Aegean islands and mainland Greece. Genetic differentiation was not correlated with different host plant species or habitat, or greenhouse versus open environment populations. Gene flow significantly decreased with geographic distance, but no isolation by distance existed when only the samples from mainland Greece or only the samples from Crete were considered. The secondary symbionts Wolbachia and Hamiltonella were present at high frequencies while Arsenophonus, Cardinium and Rickettsia were absent from Greek populations. Multilocus sequence typing of Wolbachia identified two Wolbachia strains. These two strains were found together in most of the populations studied but never in the same host individual. Their role on the observed population structure is discussed.

First of its kind, this study examines effects of preservatives on otoliths as well as on fish size and weight. Effects of 200 days of preservation in 4 % seawater formaldehyde solution and 80 % ethanol were investigated for the two small, mesopelagic fishes, Benthosema glaciale (REINHARDT, 1837), and Maurolicus muelleri (GMELIN, 1789). The body weight loss was much higher in ethanol (37-39 %) than in formaldehyde (13-16 %). The decrease in standard length was small in both preservatives and for both species (0.8-3 %). The weight of the otoliths of B. glaciale was estimated to decrease by approximately 3 % in both formaldehyde and ethanol, while a radius change in one direction could not be demonstrated unambiguously. In contrast, there were no significant changes in the otoliths of M. muelleri in any of the preservatives, thus we can use otoliths from M. muelleri preserved for up to at least 200 days in correctly buffered formaldehyde. Growth rate and age can then easily be coupled with other life history parameters obtained from preserved fish.

Life history parameters are compared for populations of Maurolicus muelleri from Norwegian fjords and the Norwegian Sea in 1995 and 1996. The mortality rate was higher in the oceanic population (2·55 for males, 2·00 for females) than in the fjords (1·15 for males, 0·97 for females). Fish from the Norwegian Sea population occupied a depth with higher light levels, which may have contributed to the higher mortality through increased visibility to predators. Differences in growth, condition and gonad weight indicated different resource levels caused by different population densities. Recruitment was weak in many fjords in 1994, but not in the Norwegian Sea. It is suggested that wind‐generated advection may affect recruitment in fjords on the western coast of Norway.
