Os sistemas de tratamento de esgoto possuem a função de minimizar os impactos ambientais do lançamento de efluentes no meio ambiente, mas eles próprios apresentam-se como um elemento impactante ao longo do seu ciclo de vida, pelas emissões e consumos que ocorrem ao longo do tratamento. O presente estudo teve por objetivo realizar a avaliação de ciclo de vida ambiental (ACV - A) de uma estação de tratamento de esgoto (ETE), dotada de lodos ativados, como pós-tratamento de reatores anaeróbios - UASB. Os resultados evidenciaram que os gases metano (CH4) e dióxido de enxofre (SO2), emitidos para a atmosfera, após a queima parcial do biogás em queimadores abertos, são os principais responsáveis pelos impactos nas categorias de mudanças climáticas (MC) e acidificação terrestre (AT), respectivamente. O alto consumo de energia no reator aeróbio, para oxigenação, também contribuiu para as categorias de acidificação terrestre e formação de ozônio. Com relação à categoria de eutrofização água doce (EUT-AD), o processo que mais contribuiu foi o lançamento do efluente tratado em corpo receptor, pela emissão de fósforo. Os resultados reportados contribuem para uma maior discussão dos processos de tratamento de esgoto, bem como de alternativas de gerenciamento de biogás, empregados em países em desenvolvimento.
