The article refers to the concept of sustainable development and eco-innovation. Strengthening the regional economy and building their competitive advantage based on innovation and knowledge are the directions of contemporary development policy of the European Union, expressed in the "Europe 2020" strategy. One of the instruments for the implementation of sustainable development are eco-innovations. As a direct result of the implementation of eco-innovations is the fact that they bring some positive effects on the environment, and in relation to the organization -they bring tangible benefits (such as reducing the consumption of energy and raw materials, increasing resource efficiency, better and cheaper waste management, improving the image of the organization). In Poland, a large part of the economic structure is traditional material-and energy-intensive industrial sectors. Implementation of the modern environmental technologies is becoming a major challenge for the region. The authors of the article present examples of implementation of good eco-innovative solutions for enterprises operating in the Podkarpackie Province. The presented examples show that the implementation of eco-innovations significantly affect the competitiveness of the company and thus also the competitiveness of the region in which the companies operate. High competitive position could in fact be achieved through innovation, at the level of companies, regions and entire economies.
The article presents the importance of the concept of sustainable development and the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on the functioning of the supply chain in organizations. The relationship between socially responsible business and sustainable development has also been noticed, as is also emphasized by many international documents, including the ISO 26000 standard, which is a guide for organizations wishing to implement these concepts into their functioning. The principles of social responsibility, like the concept of sustainable development from which they originate, emphasize the balance between the economic, social and ethical sphere of business activity. Necessary for proper and sustainable supply chain management is also the identification of all stakeholder groups with which the organization interacts and the company's policy, which creates a responsible organizational culture. Enterprises that try to operate in a socially responsible manner also pay attention to the principles of running business by all stakeholders with whom they cooperate, which is why the requirements towards them are increasingly increasing. The responsibility of the entire supply chain and the implementation of a sustainable supply chain is becoming more and more popular for contemporary enterprises, thanks to which organizations gain additional long-term benefits and, as a result, they provide a competitive advantage. The article also shows how the concept of social responsibility can become the basis for creating and implementing a sustainable supply chain in the organization and how these sustainable chains function on selected examples of energy companies in our country.
Biogas production within cooperatives and energy clusters that include both food businesses and biogas plants seems to be a good way to both improve financial health and increase energy self-sufficiency. The paper assesses the financial health of more than 2100 food businesses operating during the period of 2014–2020; the analysis was based on data from public statistics. The financial analysis carried out using the ROS (Return on Sale) indicator and the SI for the study (saving indicator) showed that the average SI/ROS increased by more than 2.78-fold over the study period. Moreover, for 185 powiats, the observed growth remained above average over a period of one to five years. The application of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method allowed the relative efficiency of biogas utilization to be calculated at the powiat level (former LAU level 1). It was found that the utilization of biogas potential within cooperatives and energy clusters grouping food businesses is most effective mainly for urban powiats.
