Este artigo baseia-se na observação dos ambientes aquáticos da cidade de Mostardas/RS, bem como no hábito cultural do consumo do chimarrão, tradicionalmente cultivado naquela localidade. O objetivo deste estudo foi compreender a possível elaboração de novos métodos de aprendizagem sobre o solo e a água, utilizando a cuia de chimarrão como tema gerador da prática pedagógica. A pesquisa foi realizada com 20 estudantes do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública. A metodologia da pesquisa consistiu na organização de uma Unidade de Aprendizagem dividida em quatro momentos: a cuia de chimarrão na minha casa / da terra para as nossas mãos: o estudo do solo / das nossas águas ao nosso chimarrão: o estudo da água / e a roda de chimarrão: natureza e cultura nas aulas de ciências. Partindo da prática pedagógica, estabeleceram-se compreensões acerca do tema gerador contextualizadas com o ensino de Ciências, bem como os conteúdos sobre solo e água. Destarte, este trabalho permitiu concluir que os conteúdos curriculares podem ser estudados em diálogo com temas geradores vinculados à realidade dos estudantes, resultando na interação destes em uma busca por novos saberes, além de desafiar o professor a repensar sua prática pedagógica no ensino de Ciências.
