Thirty-two patients with a diastolic blood pressure (BP) of at least 120 mm/Hg received 10 mg nifedipine sublingually. Fourteen were on previous antihypertensive medication, all of whom showed a decrease in diastolic BP to below 100 mmHg within 30 minutes. In the 18 patients without previous medication, the pattern of response was different. Eleven patients showed the same rapid response and four patients obtained a diastolic BP below 100 mmHg more than 30 minutes after intake. However, in three patients, the BP remained above 100 mmHg until three hours after intake.Side effects, although minor, were noticed by 50 per cent of the patients, the commonest one being headache.
