Ein!eitung. 1. Die Frsge, deren Be~ntwortung die vorliegende Arbeit anstrebt, ist die folgende: n Spieler, S 1, S~,..., S,, spielen ein gegebenes Gesellscha]ts~piel (~. Wie muff einer dieser Spieler, Sin, spielen, um dabei ein m6glichst gi~nstiges Besuttat zu erzielen ? Die Fragestellung ist allgemein bekannt, und es gibt wohl kaum eine Frage des t~glichen Lebens, in die dieses Problem nicht hineinspielte; trotzdem ist der Sinn dieser Frage kein eindeutig klarer. Denn sobsld n > 1 ist (d. h. ein eigentliches Spiel vorliegt), h~ing~ das Schicksal eines jeden Spielers aul~er von seinen eigenen Handlungen such noch von denen seiner Mi*spieler ab; und deren Benehmen ist von genau denselben egoistischen Motiven beherrscht, die wir beim ersten Spieler bestimmen m6chten. Man fiihlt, dab ein gewisser Zirkel im Wesen der Sache liegt. Wir miissen also versuehen, zu einer ldaren Fragestellung zu kommen. Was ist zun~ichst ein Gesellschaftsspiel? Es fallen unter diesen Begriff sehr viele, rech~ verschiedenartige Dinge: vonder Roulette bis zalm Schach, yore Bakkarat bis zum Bridge liegen ganz verschiedene Varianten des Sammelbegriffes ,Gesellschaftsspiel" vor. Und letzten Endes kann such irgendeia Ereignis, mi* gegebenen ~uBeren Bedingungen und gegebenen Hande!nden (den absoht freien Willen der letzteren vorausgesetzt), als Gesellschaftsspiel sngesehen werden, wenn man seine Riickwirkungen suf die in ihm handelnden Personen betrachtet~). Was ist nun das gemeinsame Merkmal al!er dieser Dinge~. ~) Der Inhalt dieser Arbeit ist (mit einigen Kfirzungen) am 7. ~. 1926 der G~ttinger Math. Man darf wohl annehmen, dal~ es dieses ist" Ein Gesellschaflsspiel besteht aus einer bestimmten Reihe yon Ereignissen, deren jedes au/ endlich vide ver~chiedene Arten aus]allen kann. Bei gewissen unter diesen Ereignissen hdngt der Aus/all vom Zu/all ab, d.h." e~ ist bekannt, mit welchen Wahrschdinlichkeiten die einzelnen m6glichen Resultate eintreten werden, abet niemand vermag sie zu beeinflussen. D. h." es ist bei jedem dieser Ereignisse bekannt, welcher Spieler S~ seinen Aus/all bestimmt, und yon den Besultaten welcher anderer (,,]riiherer") Ereignisse er im Moment seiner Entscheidung bereits Kenntnis hat. Nachdem der Aus]all aller Ereignisse bereits bekannt ist, kann nach einer /esten Regel berechnet werden, welche Zahlungen die Spieler St, S~,..., S,, aneinander zu leisten haben. Es ist leicht, diese mehr qualitative Erkl$rung in die Form einer exakten Definition zu bringen. Diese Definition des Gesellschaftsspieles wiixde so lauten: Um ein Gesellscha/tsspiel ~ vollstdndig zu beschreiben, sind die /olgenden Angaben notwendig, die zusammen die ,,Spielregel" ergeben" er Es muff angegeben werden, wie viele vom Zu/all abhgngige Ereignisse oder ,,Ziehungen" und wieviel vo...
