These two tests are designed to be used together in place of a single test of general intelligence so that it is possible to assess separately: a. A person's present capacity for intellectual activity whatever his education or cultural background, b. the fund of information he has acquired whatever his present capacity for intellectual activity, c. the psychological significance of discrepancies between the two. They are intended to cover the whole range of intellectual development rather than to differentiate clearly between individuals of approximately the same intellectual level.
In this paper, some recent results relating to the stability o f scores on the Raven Progressive Matrices Test for different subgroups within and between the United Kingdom, the United States, and other Western societies are summarised. Subsequent sections deal with variation over time. A possible explanation for the variation in norms over time and between ethnic groups within the United States is offered.
