Shear deformable plate and shell finite element formulations are utilized to predict transverse stresses in composite shell structures. In-plane stresses are computed by solving the constitutive equations at the layer level. These stress variations then serve as input to the equilibrium equations which are integrated to obtain the transverse stresses. The approach improves upon the "classical" laminate theory and thus provides an efficient numerical procedure for thin to moderately thick shell structures.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
