The kinetics of the permanganate ion oxidation of substituted ,/3-unsaturated carboxylate ions were investigated in phosphate buffered solutions (pH 6.83 ± 0.03). Although the rate of oxidation is not very sensitive to electronic effects, steric factors appear to be important. The possible ambiphilic nature of permanganate ion is discussed. Soluble (colloidal) manganese dioxide is the inorganic product.Although there are numerous studies of the permanganate ion oxidation of unsaturated compounds in aqueous and nonaqueous media,1,3"33 there is a dearth of (1) Part 15:
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
