Schlüsselwörter Stress · Allostase · Salutogenese · Biopsychosoziales Modell · Klinische Sozialarbeit 264 J. Steinle 3Between challenge and chance: the allostasis-stress-modell and the salutogenic social work Abstract The theory of allostasis provides a differentiated view on our understanding of stress, as the common resource-and risk-oriented concepts do. Thus, the stress reaction serves the successful long-term adaptation to the social environment. In contrast, an elevated as well as a reduced stress reactivity leads to a cumulative allostatic load and can be manifested in diseases. Therefore a well-balanced stress exposure should be aimed to provide development and simultaneously prevent wear and tear on the body. Social work often concentrates on solely stress reducing methods and needs an increased ambition to use the possibilities for development via plasticity adaptation. Within an 'upstream focus', community orientated clinical social work has an outstanding potential to maintain or even promote health of people. Already established methods, like the social capital theory, seem to fit very well with the consequences of allostasis and salutogenesis. Further research is needed to enhance the practice and theory of social work science with the new insights of allostasis.
