Nachdem heutigen Tages yon der Mehrzahl der Forseher das Chromatin a]s der Tr~tger der erb]ichen Eigensehaften angeseben wird, ist das Interesse begreiflich, welches man der vor der Befruchtung stattfindenden Reduktion dieser wiehtigen Substanz augenblicklich zuwendet. In ununterbroehener Fo]ge drgngen sich die Arbeiten, in welchen diese Ta.gesfrage erOrtert, oder doch wenigstens gestreift wird. So verschieden die Resultate der Forseher im einze]nen sein mOgen, in der einen, schon von v an B e n e d e n (1) erkannten, grundlegenden Thatsaehe stimmen alle fiberein : dass in den reifen, befruehtungsf~thigen Geschleehtskernen die Zahl tier Chromosome auf die H~tlfte der far die Species iiblichen Normalzahl herabgesetzt ist, um sich bei der Kopulation der Vorkerne wieder zu der vollen Zahl zu erganzen. Die Bedeutung, welche dieser Reduktion zukommt~ wird freilich yon den einzelnen Forsehern in sehr versehiedener Weise beurteilt, je nach der Vorstellung, welehe dieselben yon dem Wesen des Chromatins und der Chromosomen haben. Wet die letzteren als selbstandige Teile des Kerngerfistes ansieht, die auch wghrend des Zusta.ndes der Kernruhe erha]ten b]eiben, wer sie als ,,Individuen" betraehtet, tier wird mit Bov e r i in der Redukti0n ein Mittel sehen, um eine Verdoppelung der Chromosomenzahl, die sonst bei der Kopulation tier Vorkerne auftreten mfisste, zu verhindern.
