Ontstellend voor velen was de dood van Dr. CI~aISTZNE JO-HAnnA BUISMA~ op 27 Maart j.1.Hoe kon bet ook anders bij een persoonlijkheid, die zoo sterk talent voor wetenschap met begrip voor praktijk aan hoogstaande karaktereigensehappen paarde. Zoo heel veel was hog van haar te verwaehten geweest.Voor de lezers van dit Tijdschrift is zij vanaf 1927 een bekende geweest. Na een korte publicatie over bet wortelrot van Calla, heeft zij haar talrijke rapporten over het iepenziekte-vraagstuk gepubliceerd en men kent haar dan ook voornamelijk in verband met deze onderzoekingen.Maar voor degenen die haar werk hebben leeren waardeeren moet ook de besehrijving van haar ]evensloop van belang Zijn.CHRISTINE BldISlgn~ werd in 1900 te Leeuwarden geboren, waar haar vader koopman is en haar moeder zeer bekend is geworden door haar werk op politiek en sociaal gebied; sinds jaren toeh is zij daar lid van de gemeenteraad.CtIRISTI~E was van jongs af een groot liefhebster van de levende natuur; daarnaast bleek op her gymnasium haar belangstelling in oude en moderne talen. Zij moet als leerling wel zeer ,,keen" zijn geweest.Met groot enthousiasme begon zij in 1919 haar studie in de biologie te Amsterdam, waar zij in 1925 doctoraal examen deed. Reeds v65r dit examen volgde zij een praktikum in de plantenziekten te Baarn en op 1 Febr. 1925 werd zij daar assistent aan her Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures, een betrekking, die zij twee jaar waarnam en door welke zij een ,,goede kijk op schimmels" te pakken kreeg. Onderwijl werkte zij aan haar proefsehrift over ,,Wortelrotting veroorzaakt door lagere zwammen (Phycomycetes)". (engelseh). Door bestudeering van de rotting van de Calla-wortels, die haar hierbij in handen kwam, kreeg zij aanraking met de praktijk, voor welks vraagstukken zij direct ,,open stond".Na haar promotie in Maart 1927 begon zij haar werk over de Iepenziekte, die sinds een aantal jaren de wetenschappelijke gemoederen zoowel als her publiek bezighield. De Nederl~ndsehe Heide-Maatschappij vroeg, daartoe in staat gesteld door het fonds ,,Oranjebond van Orde" een hernieuwd onderzoek naar
