Although ethnic microaggressions have received increased empirical attention in recent years, there remains a paucity of research regarding how these subtle covert forms of discrimination contribute to Latino mental health. The present study examined the role of traumatic stress symptoms underlying the relationship between ethnic microaggressions and depression. Further, ethnic identity and general self-efficacy were tested as moderators between the ethnic microaggressions and traumatic stress link. Among a sample of 113 Latino adults, moderated mediational analyses revealed statistically significant conditional indirect effects in which traumatic stress symptoms mediated the relationship between ethnic microaggressions and depression while ethnic identity and self-efficacy functioned as moderators. The major findings suggested that the indirect effects were the most robust within low ethnic identity and low self-efficacy. The findings are discussed within a stress and coping framework that highlight the internal resources and stress responses associated with experiencing ethnic microaggressions.

A global migration crisis has resulted in unprecedented numbers of refugees coming to Canada and other countries. A third of these refugees are youth, arriving with family members or alone. Although specific circumstances differ widely, refugee youth need support with language learning, education, and adjusting to a new country; a significant number also need mental health services. For this review paper, we focused on mental health issues and challenges refugee youth face, as well as counselling practices that have been found to be effective with these youth. There has been very little research specifically focused on refugee-youth mental health in Canada; however, the studies cited come from Canada, the United States, Australia, and European countries that have much similarity in their approaches to mental health counselling and psychotherapy. An overview of the refugee-youth context is presented first, followed by a description of refugee mental health issues and challenges, a discussion of barriers to engagement with mental health services, and suggestions for effective mental health counselling practices for this population. The paper concludes with a summary of key findings from the literature and suggestions for future research to address the gaps in knowledge. Given the adversities many young refugees experience premigration, during migration, and after resettlement, it is not surprising that they experience mental health problems. Despite difficulties, young refugees demonstrate adaptability, perseverance, and resilience; having mental health professionals acknowledge their strengths and abilities will help them on their healing path and support them to adapt positively to a new home.

Objectives: This article reports on an investigation of factors that promote or impede the development of social cohesion in communities receiving refugee newcomers largely of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) backgrounds. This community-based research was completed in collaboration with a community partner—a settlement agency dedicated to supporting people with immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Method: Interviews were conducted with refugee newcomers, professionals working with refugee populations, individuals involved in private sponsorship of refugees, and long-term community residents. Results: Results focus on the essential relational and contextual issues to consider when designing a program to build social connections. Together, the findings suggest the value of trying to replicate how relationships form organically, the need to collaborate across systems, and the importance of addressing societal narratives about how newcomers are perceived. Conclusions: Recommendations regarding the process of creating a community program are offered. These findings will be shared with a range of stakeholders to cocreate and implement a new program for enhancing social cohesion in our community.

This paper discusses growth-promoting supervisory practices from the perspectives of women of color psychology trainees. Based on three personal narratives, we discuss the unique ways that supervisors invite the multiple salient identities of trainees into the supervisory relationship and engage in a mentorship approach tailored to each trainee. We discuss key themes that emerged across the three narratives: the importance of a supervisor pivoting between the role of the expert and the role of a learner, the value of embracing an attitude of shared responsibility toward promoting trainee growth, and the role of cultural humility in the supervisory relationship. We draw from various theories in framing our work, including Paulo Freire's theory of conscientização and Atkinson, Morten, and Sue's (1998) Five-Stage Model of Cultural/Racial Identity Development. We close with situating these impactful supervisory practices within the context of the American Psychological Association's (2015) "Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology."
