Do CMA /CCSA jUFPB INTRODUÇÃOOs estudos de caso, além do reconhecido valor didático, têm um papel importantíssimo a desempenhar na pesquisa em administração. Eles permitem um maior aprofundamen to nas pesquisas que visam uma compreensão de processos administrativos, tais como o processo decisório, os quais são histórico-dependentes. Os estudos de caso são aplicáveis tanto para os aspectos descritivos como para os normativos.A teoria da solução de problemas sugere que os estudos de caso são potencialmente mais eficazes na descoberta de soluções para os problemas mais difíceis ou intratáveis da administração, isto porque eles provém as condições ideais para a criatividade e: conseqüente-men te, para a geração de novas representações ou modelos.A impressão de que os estudos .de caso são menos precisos do que os estudos de dados agregados não é necessariamente verdadeira. Para começar, os estudos de caso podem ser tão quantitativos quanto outros tipos de estudos. Depois, a validade de uma pesquisa não depende do grau de quantificação por ela alcançado. Desde que do ponto de vistâ da lógica as conclusões oriundas de qualquer inferência indutiva jamais podem ser confirmadas ou negadas definitivamente, o critério mais importante para o julgamento de uma pesquisa deveria ser sua relevância e não a abordagem usada. Portanto, por permitirem maior flexibilidade metodológica, maior integração dos dados e sobretudo por favorecerem a geração de representações inovadoras dos problemas mais difíceis de gerência pública e privada, recomenda-se um maior uso dos estudos de caso na pesquisa em administração. TEORIA DA.SOLUÇÃO DE PROBLEMASHerbert Simon e Allen Newell' formularam uma teoria da solução de problemas baseada em pesquisas empíricas com seres humanos e computadores, a qual sugere que um problema no mundo real (ambiente-problema) é representado de formas diferentes na memória interna de um indivíduo que tenta resolvê-lo. Cada uma dessas formas (no sentido gestáltico da palavra) é denominada representação.ê A estrutura de uma representação é determinada pela estrutura do ambiente-problema. Entretanto, somente aqueles aspectos do ambiente-problema relevantes para os objetivos do indivíduo, isto é, o solueíonador-do-problema, são incluídos naquela representação: à atividade psicológica necessária para resolver o problema representado na mente, aqueles autores chamaram de método. Propuseram ainda que esta atividade é desenvolvida exclusivamente dentro das fronteiras bem definídas da representação escolhida. Então, segundo eles, enquanto a estrutura do ambienteproblema determina a estrutura da representação, é esta última que determina que método(s) pode(m) ser usado(s) para a solução do problema.Entre. as questões geradas por essa teoria, uma parece-me diretamente relevante para o assunto deste trabalho.
