Cet article est le résultat d’une réflexion sur une investigation archivistique concernant les relations bilatérales franco-maliennes durant les époques socialiste et militaire (1960-1991) . Pour la mener à bien, j’ai relevé deux défis, l’un matériel, l’autre épistémologique : la fermeture du « terrain » et la prépondérance des documents français dans le domaine de la diplomatie qui influence nécessairement les interprétations de l’histoire des relations bilatérales. Les archives françaises sont intéressantes pour étudier les relations extérieures des ex-colonies françaises de l’Afrique : elles sont organisées, plus ou moins accessibles et exhaustives. Mais le déséquilibre entre l’accessibilité des documents français et maliens est exacerbé par le manque d’accès au terrain. Cet article montre une tentative fructueuse de composer avec cette double contrainte, à partir d’une expérience de recherche doctorale en trois temps : les méthodes alternatives à mobiliser, la façon dont on peut les appliquer au cas des relations franco-maliennes durant la période considérée, et enfin quelques principes pour lire de manière critique les récits des ex-colonisateurs dans différents fonds d’archives européens et y retrouver malgré toute la voix malienne.
