M SALVADOR existe uma instituição universitária que, há 45 anos, realiza pesquisas sobre as comunidades negras em nosso país, assim como suas origens na África. Trata-se do Centro de Estudos Afro-Orientais (CEAO), da Universidade Federal da Bahia. Localizado no principal logradouro do Pelourinho, ele mantém um profundo relacionamento com os baianos, pois se dedica a estudar a vida, o sofrimento e as lutas dos escravos e de seus descendentes, vale dizer, de quase 80% da população do Estado.Para recolher as lições desse núcleo acadêmico, entrevistamos o antropólogo Jocélio Teles, seu atual diretor, que rememorou conosco os trabalhos de pesquisadores que há várias décadas contribuem para desvendar a trajetória de uma população simultaneamente oprimida pela desigualdade social e pelos preconceitos raciais. A estrutura e o trabalho do CEAOESTUDOS AVANÇADOS -Professor, o que é o Centro de Estudos Afro-Orientais da Universidade Federal da Bahia? Qual é sua estrutura?Jocélio Teles -O CEAO é um órgão suplementar da Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas. Foi criado em 1959 pelo professor George Agostinho da Silva e, inicialmente, era ligado à reitoria da Universidade. Ou seja, não tinha, como hoje, autonomia administrativa e acadêmica. Nossas atividades estão voltadas para cursos de graduação e de pós-graduação. Nele atuam professores do Departamento de História -João José Reis, que é editor da revista Afro-Ásia e Valdemir Zamparoni, co-editor dessa revista -e professores do Departamento de Antropologia, Lívio Sansone, Jéferson Bacelar e eu.Não temos um quadro de pesquisadores fora do âmbito da UFBA. Todavia, fazemos convênios com diversas universidades estrangeiras, algumas norte-americanas, e também com a Universidade de Ilê Ifé, da Nigéria. Com esses convênios recebemos pesquisadores, que passam aqui um determinado período, recebendo apoio logístico -biblioteca, participação em discussões e seminários etc.Como exemplo, o professor Lívio Sansone, que coordena um projeto chamado Fábrica de Idéias, conta com o apoio da Fundação Sephis, da Holanda, e da Fundação Ford. Esse patrocínio tem sido fundamental porque, em cada ano, entre o mês de junho e agosto, selecionamos cerca de quarenta pós-graduandos, do Brasil e do exterior, para cursos sobre relações sociais e a identidade
