As fontes de meados do século XVII permitem visualizar uma complexa conjuntura econômica-política-religiosa articulada entre as vilas de baixo da capitania de Ilhéus, o governo geral em Salvador e a coroa portuguesa com suas demais conquistas ultramarinas.
