Há aproximadamente duas décadas observa-se uma tendência mundial de valorização dos chamados circuitos curtos de comercialização. Estes são concebidos, por governos, organizações da sociedade civil e academia, como estratégias importantes na conformação de um sistema agroalimentar, alternativo, baseado em modelos produtivos mais sustentáveis e em formas mais justas de consumo. As análises contidas neste artigo procuraram compreender em que medida os circuitos curtos criados pela Central de Comercialização da Agricultura Familiar (CECAFES), no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte - Brasil, têm potencial para colocar em curso um modelo de produção e consumo mais sustentável na região semiárida, conforme sugerido pela literatura. A partir da pesquisa de campo com 15 agricultores (representantes dos mais de três mil agricultores do semiárido), recuperou-se a trajetória de formação dessa cadeia, destacando o papel dos produtores, dos consumidores e dos atores externos a ela vinculados. Os resultados revelam o protagonismo dos agricultores e suas organizações na garantia de volume e diversidade de produtos, sobretudo os agroecológicos. A aproximação com os consumidores tem ensejado a busca por novas formas de certificação da produção orgânica, ampliando rendimentos e abrindo outros canais de comercialização. Já do ponto de vista dos consumidores há uma percepção muito imprecisa sobre o papel que estes podem cumprir na sustentação dessas cadeias. A opção por esse tipo de mercado é orientada, em grande medida, por preocupações ligadas à sua própria saúde, pelos baixos preços ou comodidade na locomoção, revelando pouco compromisso social. Apesar da importância desses circuitos, a emergência de um sistema agroalimentar alternativo, fundamentado em novas formas de racionalidade socioeconômicas e ambientais, em especial por parte dos consumidores, podem ser comparadas a brotos ou sementes de uma transição desejada (Ploeg, 2008) que ainda terá um longo caminho a percorrer.
Este trabalho tem como objetivo refletir sobre o processo de transição para uma agricultura de base ecológica a partir da feira agroecológica de Mossoró. A busca por maior autonomia da agricultura familiar camponesa implica tanto um novo projeto para a produção, com a diversificação da alimentação familiar, quanto para a comercialização. A venda direta de produtos ao consumidor cria cumplicidade entre produção e consumo, no caminho de se alcançar maior sustentabilidade produtiva, social e econômica para esse segmento. Esta via alternativa é distinta do modelo de modernização da agricultura, em que a atividade agrícola era considerada viável apenas quando inserida na lógica da especialização, tanto no uso de insumos agroindustriais como em uma produção voltada para o mercado convencional, marginalizando a soberania alimentar e os mercados de prox- imidade. Para essa investigação, foram utilizadas algumas categorias essenciais para a análise do processo de transição agroecológica que apontem para a emancipação, tais como autonomia, identidade, resistência e elaboração de projeto de superação, para refletir sobre os diversos avanços e limites dessa iniciativa.
