ABSTRACTIn humid tropical land-use systems weed diversity and aggressiveness are extremely high, posing serious limitations to no-tillage agriculture. This paper investigates the effects of combining low-and high-quality organic residues on weed abundance and biomass and selected soil quality indicators. For this purpose, a field experiment was installed in January 2002 on-station at Maranhao State University, comprising four legume species: Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) De Wit., Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp, Clitoria fairchildiana R.A.Howard and Acacia mangium Willd., resulting in the following treatments in a completely randomized block design with 4 replications: L.leucocephala + C.cajan; A.mangium + C.cajan; C.fairchildiana + L.leucocephala; L.leucocephala + A.mangium and control (no legumes). Sampling was conducted in 2005 and 2007. We determined weed abundance and biomass, and N, P, K, Ca, lignin e polyphenol contents of the residues. In the topsoil we determined pH, the contents of organic matter, P, K, Ca, Mg, and H+Al, and soil density, total porosity and aeration capacity. We conclude that aggressiveness of weeds can be reduced and at the same time soil fertility can be improved with alley-cropping systems which contain the combination of both high-and low-quality residue producing plants.
Babassu (Attalea speciosa C.Martius, Arecaceae) is a palm with extraordinary socioeconomic and ecologic importance in large areas of tropical Brazil, especially in frequently burned and degraded landscapes. Nevertheless, surprisingly little is known about this keystone species. This paper investigates the allometry of babassu, in order to improve understanding on palm architecture and to provide researchers with an efficient tool for aboveground biomass estimation of juvenile and adult palms. Juvenile leaf biomass can be accurately predicted with the easily measurable minimum diameter of rachis at 30 cm extension. Adult palm biomass can be estimated based on woody stem height, a variable fairly easily measurable on-field. Leaf biomass of adult palms was highly variable, averaged 31.7% of aboveground biomass and can be estimated only indirectly through the relationships between wood:leaf-ratio and total aboveground biomass. Carbon contents varied little in the babassu palm, without size-or growth-stage related differences, suggesting the general applicability of values (42.5% C for stems, 39.8% C for leaves). As a consequence of the limited secondary diameter growth inherent to palms, stem diameter of adult palms is unrelated to palm height and biomass. Stem tapering decreases with increasing palm height. This is partially compensated by increasing wood density in near cylindrical stems. Nevertheless, maximum babassu palm height of about 30 meters appears to be dictated by mechanical stability constraints. All allometric relationships of babassu described in this study are not affected by vegetation stand age, indicating the general applicability of these relationships.
Brazil is one of the largest producers of tropical wood in the world. Much of this wood is extracted from the Amazon region, especially in the state of Pará. Despite empirical knowledge, there is little information in the literature about the selectivity of trade and how this production has been behaving in recent years. Is there any relationship between this legal timber trade and deforestation? In this work, we compile data reports from control agencies and analyze the dynamics of the legal timber market in the state of Pará between 2009 and 2015 in terms of species, volume, and monetary value. We also correlate changes in volume m−3 and value m−3 with deforestation increase in the same period and region. We find that only ten groups of species represent almost 50% of the total timber volume marketed in the State, mainly from the Massaranduba (Manilkara) group. According to our models, the supply of a species of wood on the market is defined by its monetary value and not by its availability or characteristics, which hinders the insertion of new species and increases selectivity. Since 2011 the volume of legally traded logs has been decreasing sharply. Traditional forest regions in the state already demonstrate depletion in forested areas. While others, such as the lower Amazon region, have been increasing production, showing that new forestry operations areas are being used for harvesting in the function of the lower availability in traditional areas. Our models show that the legal reduced impact logging timber volume has an inverse relationship with the deforestation increase. Otherwise, preference for a small group of timber types still predominates, which may lead local woods to the danger of extinction.
Description of the subject. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, soybean cultivation areas have been expanding in the Legal Amazon. Among the factors that contribute to the process of expansion of cultivation of grains in the Amazon, favorable climate conditions are one of the most important, and these include high rainfall indices and good thermal regimes during the cultivation period. Objectives. In this context, the objective of this study was to describe responses of soybean production as a function of climate variables, considering data from an important grain production center in the Amazon. Method. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used including the following response variables: rainfall (R), air temperature (T), real evapotranspiration, water stress (WST) and surplus, soybean area harvested (HVA), quantity produced (PD), occurrence of El Niño and La Niña (LAN). Results. Production variables were negatively correlated with precipitation and water surplus. There was also a negative correlation between El Niño, temperature and water stress. The variables that had greater weight in component 1 were R, T and WST. Considering component 2, the variables that most contributed to the variation were HVA, PD and LAN. Conclusions. The strong or severe occurrence of La Niña influences the soybean production in the region of Belterra-PA, due to the high rainfall index causing excess water in the soil, leading the plants to stress. The moderate occurrence of La Niña positively influences soybean production in the region to maintain the water supply at adequate levels for the plants. These results show the importance of monitoring climate variables for agriculture in the region.
