MICRO-ABRASION WEAR MAPPING FOR AISI 316L STAINLESS STEEL: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ON UNTREATED AND PLASMA NITRIDED SURFACES AbstractsThe transition in the wear mechanisms of a material can occur owing to changes on the tribosystem conditions. "Free ball" micro-scale abrasion method is widely used for studying the associated phenomena. In this work, the behavior of both the wear coefficient and wear mechanism for the 316 stainless steel was studied as a function of the testing load, abrasive (SiC or SiO2) as well their concentration in the slurry, and material hardness (untreated and plasma nitrided). Grooving wear was found to be dominant when using SiO2 slurries, whereas wear in SiC slurries is dominated by the mechanism of rolling. In spite of no transition in the wear mechanisms when changed the testing conditions, it was found a trend in the wear coefficient to increase whether at high loads or replacing SiO2 by SiC, and to fall down when the steel is nitrided (hardened) and low slurry concentrations are used. A decreasing in both the wear coefficient and "running-in" step was observed when the testing load and SiO2 concentration are simultaneously increased.
STAINLESS STEEL EVALUATION OF STANDARD SUPERAUSTENITIC BS EN NO. 14587 IN CORROSION RESISTANCE FOR PITTING AbstractIn the petrochemical, nuclear and pharmaceutical technological advancement is aimed at safety and reliability of equipment with the mechanical strength and corrosion. Currently, the use of stainless steel superaustenitic is an interesting solution to a longer service life of industrial components subject to harsh environments, such as in saline media. This work aims to investigate the appearance of pits in a commercial steel superaustenitic approximate chemical composition 25Cr28Ni4Mo in saline sodium chloride solution. The steel was cast and thermally treated by solubilizing the 1050ºC for 1 h in order to remove precipitates. The microstructural analysis before and after the corrosion tests were made by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Was observed with the electrochemical tests and linear polarization impedance, which superaustenitic stainless steel exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in saline, further characterized by the images did not reveal the formation of pitting, even when subjected to high potentials.
INFLUENCE OF PLASMA NITRIDING ON HARDNESS FROM BLADES OF THE COUNTER-KNIFE OF INDUSTRIAL CHIPPER WOOD AbstractThis paper studies the influence of the plasma nitriding treatment on the hardness of blades used in counter-knives of industrial chipper wood. These parts are manufactured in alloys with high content of Chrome and Carbon, similar in chemical to cold work steels AISI Series D. For this study, small samples of the blades received heat treatment of quenching and double tempering, and were then nitrided by plasma 30, 90, 180, 360 minutes at a temperature of 450 ° C, pressure of 2 Torr fixed and gas mixture from 20%N 2 and 80%H 2 . Soon after metallographic analyzes with an optical microscope aid, surface hardness and hardness profile test with microhardness in Vickers scale. The results showed that all treatment hardening time was compared to the untreated material, where time 180 minutes led to the formation of the layer with a higher average value of surface hardness -1171.20 HV.
