Agro-economic viability of intercropping taro with indeterminate snap beans in different cropping seasonIntercropping is a cultivation system that aims to achieve high productivity per unit area and promote the sustainability of the production system. The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic viability and economic yield of taro (Colocasia esculenta) intercropped (additive association) with snap beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) of indeterminate growth habit. The experiment was conducted in the vegetable experimental field of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, from October 2011 to June 2012. A randomized-blocks experimental design with four replicates was adopted. Treatments consisted of three crops of arrowroot intercropped with sunnhemp, with the sunnhemp being harvested at 90, 120, and 150 days after seeding (DAS), plus a control treatment (arrowroot monocrop). At each sunnhemp harvesting time, the length of arrowroot plants, mass and nutrient production by sunnhemp, and incidence of invasive plants were evaluated. At harvesting, in addition to rhizome productivity, nutrients and starch production by the rhizomes were evaluated. The intercropping provided a greater arrowroot plant length and lower incidence of invasive plants in the area. The sunnhemp harvest performed at 90 DAS provided greater productivity of arrowroot rhizomes and starch, with the sunnhemp producing 29.7 t ha -1 of fresh matter, and 120, 18, 127, 46, and 6 kg ha -1 of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. For most of these nutrients, the amount exported by the arrowroot rhizome was lower than that produced by the sunnhemp, indicating the possibility of improvements in soil fertility.
This study aimed to evaluate the taro (Colocasia esculenta), var. São Bento, in response to different irrigation strategies. The experiment was carried out at Ifes campus Santa Teresa, Brazil, at an altitude of 130 meters above sea level, using a randomized block design (RBD) with five treatments for the water availability factor of culture (f factor) equivalent to 0.1; 0.2; 0.3; 0.4 and 0.5, and four replications. Meteorological data were used to estimate the crop water demand, performing daily water balance using spreadsheets. We evaluated the applied water depth, the yield of commercial cormels and the water use efficiency by taro, due to the f factor. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and regressions. Increasing the f factor provided a reduction of applied irrigation depths. Lighter and frequent irrigations improved the development and yield of taro and can be recommended for its management.
TOMATO PERFORMANCE IN VERTICAL TUNA SYSTEM IN SPIRAL CONDUCTED WITH ONE OR TWO HASTES ABSTRACT:The current study aims to evaluate the agroeconomic viability of the tomato in a spiral vertical steerage system conducted with one or two stems per plant. The experimental design was in a randomized block with a 3x2 factorial, with four replications, and three tutoring methods were evaluated: spiral, Mexican and individual bamboo stakes vertically and two systems of conduction: with oneortwo stems per plant. Fruit production per plant, fruit diameter, number of fruits per size class, height of plants and insertion of the first cluster and the cost of production were evaluated. The spiral tutoring method showed fruit production per plant similar to the method with bamboo and superior to the Mexican one. When the plants were conducted with a stem, the fruit diameter obtained in the spiral method was superior to the Mexican method, however, did not differ from the method with bamboo. The net revenue obtained in the spiral method was higher than the Mexican method and lower than the method with bamboo. The vertical bamboo tufting presents greater economic profitability when compared to the spiral and Mexican methods. The spiral tutoring can replace the Mexican tutoring, since it presents greater profitability, being accredited as a new method of tutoring for the cultivation of undetermined growth tomato. Keywords: Lycopersicon esculentum Mill, driving system, indeterminate growth.
Considering the need to reduce costs in the production of seedlings, the use of agricultural wastes becomes essential. The objective of this study was to evaluate a substrate composed of agricultural residues replacing the commercial substrate. The experiment was carried out in two phases. For the first phase, seedling production, we used a completely randomized design with six treatments and eight replications, using commercial substrate (Bioplant®) and five treatments with increasing proportions of moinha/descending proportions of rice husk (0/40; 10/30; 20/20; 30/10 and 40/0%), and fixed proportions of coconut fiber (15%) and pine bark (45%). We evaluated plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, root and shoot dry masses, and Dickson quality index at 33 days after sowing. In the second experiment, cabbage development under field conditions, the treatments were maintained with four replications, using the randomized block design. We evaluated cycle length, compactness, head and stem diameter, number of basal external leaves, mass of fresh matter of the head, and commercial yield. We recommend a substrate composed of 40% moinha, 15% coconut fiber, and 45% pine bark in the production of cabbage seedlings, replacing the commercial substrate.
Intercropping using legumes is one of the ways to protect the main crop, and in long term improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil. The aim of this work was to evaluate the intercropping of Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott (taro) and the tropical legume Crotalaria juncea L. (sunn hemp), cutting sunn hemp at ten periods during the cycle. The experiment was carried out under field conditions between 09/23/2010 and 06/04/2011. It consisted of 11 treatments related to the 10 cutting times of sunn hemp (55, 70, 85,100, 115, 130, 145, 160, 190, and 220 days after sowing - DAS) plus a control of taro with no sunn hemp. During the cycle, taro was evaluated for plant height and incidence of leaf burn. At the time of cutting the sunn hemp, the plant height, fresh and dry matter masses, and nutrient content of the biomass were calculated. During taro harvest, we evaluated the productivity of the mother rhizomes and classified the cormels. Taro plants shaded by sunn hemp showed a lower incidence of leaf burn. The sunn hemp cut from 145 DAS onwards affected the yield of comercial rhizomes and total and agroeconomic indexes. Sunn hemp cut up to 130 DAS provided better performance of taro, without compromising productivity and economic indicators, with the highest amounts of N and K observed in the biomass cut at 115 DAS.
