BACKGROUND: In Ghana, the discharge of untreated gold mine wastewater contaminates the aquatic systems with heavy metals such as copper (Cu), threatening ecosystem and human health. The undesirable effects of these pollutants can be avoided by treatment of the mining wastewater prior to discharge. In this work, the sorption properties of agricultural materials, namely coconut shell, coconut husk, sawdust and Moringa oleifera seeds for Cu(II) were investigated.
This study evaluates the possibility
of adding value to cork granulates,
byproducts of cork processing, by using them as biosorbents and precursors
of activated carbons. Activation was carried out by impregnation with
phosphoric acid followed by pyrolysis under N2 flow. Furthermore,
biosorbents were treated with a cationic surfactant and activated
carbons were subject to a second pyrolysis under propene with the
objective of improving hydrophobicity. Physico-chemical, textural,
and surface characterization of the materials was carried out employing,
among others, N2 adsorption isotherms, Fourier transform
infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, potentiometric titration, temperature
programmed desorption (TPD), and immersion calorimetry. Selected samples
were tested in the removal of sunflower oil emulsified in water. Activated
carbons with higher surface area and lower amount of acidic surface
groups showed higher uptake capacity for sunflower oil.
BACKGROUND: Intratracheal antibiotic administration is increasingly used for treating respiratory infections. Limited information is available on delivery devices, techniques, and safety. METHODS: An online survey on intratracheal administration of anti-infective agents in mechanically ventilated adults was answered by health-care workers from 192 ICUs to assess the most commonly used devices, current delivery practices, and safety issues. We investigated whether ICU usage experience (>3 y) impacted its performance. RESULTS: Intratracheal antibiotic administration was a current practice in 87 ICUs (45.3%), with 40 (46%) having experience with the technique (>3 y). Sixty-six (78.6%) of 84 health-care workers reported avoiding intratracheal antibiotic administration due to an absence of evidence-based guidelines (78.6%). Jet nebulizers were the most commonly used devices for delivery, in 24 less experienced ICUs (27.6%) and in 18 (20.7%) experienced ICUs. Direct tracheal instillation (6; 6.9%) was still considered for drug prescription in 12 ICUs (6.9%). More experience resulted in neither greater adherence to measures improving the drug's delivery efficiency (93 measures in the experienced group; 27.9%) nor a greater adoption of measures to increase safety. Indeed, the expiratory filter was changed after each nebulization in only 2 experienced ICUs (6.9%), whereas 15 (51.7%) changed it daily instead. CONCLUSIONS: Intratracheal antibiotic administration is a common therapeutic modality in ICUs, but inadequate practices were widely encountered, independent of the level of experience with the technique. This suggests a need to develop standardization to reduce variability and improve safety and efficacy.
Adsorption kinetic studies are of great significance in evaluating the performance of a given adsorbent and gaining insight into the underlying mechanism. This work investigated the sorption kinetics of Cu(II) on to coconut shell and Moringa oleifera seeds using batch techniques. To understand the mechanisms of the biosorption process and the potential rate-controlling steps, kinetic models were used to fit the experimental data. The results indicate that kinetic data were best described by the pseudo-second-order model with correlation coefficients (R2) of 0.9974 and 0.9958 for the coconut shell and Moringa oleifera seeds, respectively. The initial sorption rates obtained for coconut shell and Moringa oleifera seeds were 9.6395 x 10(-3) and 8.3292 x 10(-2) mg g(-1) min(-1), respectively. The values of the mass transfer coefficients obtained for coconut shell (1.2106 x 10(-3) cm s(-1)) and Moringa oleifera seeds (8.965 x 10(-4) cm s(-1)) indicate that the transport of Cu(II) from the bulk liquid to the solid phase was quite fast for both materials investigated. The results indicate that intraparticle diffusion controls the rate of sorption in this study; however, film diffusion cannot be neglected, especially at the initial stage of sorption.
This paper describes the effect of several inhibiting components on three potential hosts for the bio-based production of methyl propionate, namely, wild-type Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, and evolved Saccharomyces cerevisiae IMS0351. The inhibition by the lignocellulose-derived products 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde, vanillin, and syringaldehyde and the fermentation products 2-butanol, 2-butanone, methyl propionate, and ethyl acetate has been assessed for these strains in defined medium. Multiple screenings were performed using small-scale cultures in both shake flasks and microtiter plates. Technical drawbacks revealed the limited applicability of the latter in this study. The microbial growth was characterized by means of a lag-time model, and the inhibitory thresholds were determined using product-inhibition models. The lignocellulose-derived products were found to be highly inhibitory, and none of the strains could grow in the presence of 2.0 g L−1 of product. From the fermentation products tested, methyl propionate had the most severe impact resulting in complete inhibition of all the strains when exposed to concentrations in the range of 12–18 g L−1. In general, S. cerevisiae and B. subtilis were comparatively more tolerant than E. coli to all the fermentation products, despite E. coli’s lower sensitivity towards vanillin. The results suggest that, overall, the strains investigated have good potential to be engineered and further established as hosts for the bio-based production of methyl esters.
