A goal-oriented algorithm is developed and applied for hp-adaptive approximations given by the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the biharmonic equation. The methodology is based on the dual problem associated with the target functional. We consider three error estimators and analyse their properties as basic tools for the design of the hp-adaptive algorithm. To improve adaptation, the combination of two different error estimators is used, each one at its best efficiency, to guide the tasks of where and how to adapt the approximation spaces. The performance of the resulting hp-adaptive schemes is illustrated by numerical experiments for two benchmark problems. k or k are applied for the hp-decision, with a significant improvement in the performance, as compared with the non-combined scheme using only the first error estimator for both tasks.Depending on the choice of the quantity of interest, the adjoint problem associated to (1)-(2) and J.u/ is also a boundary value problem for the biharmonic operator. As discussed in [19], this is the
a b s t r a c tIn January 2008, the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM) invited the scientific community to solve the Girkmann problem by finite element methods. The challenge was to get certain quantities of interest in terms of the approximate solutions within 5% of accuracy of their exact counterparts. For instance, the goal could be to evaluate the bending moment or the shear force at the junction of the shell and the ring. The purpose of the present paper is to solve an axisymmetric solid elastic model for this problem using a continuous finite element method in combination with discontinuous interface elements in the region of interest (named as the DG-FEM method). The numerical results of the p version of the DG-FEM method are presented and discussed. The results are verified with respect to previous results published in the literature showing excellent consistent results.
Several authors have proposed new techniques using multi-attribute analysis and machine learning. Studying the influence of different data treatments on such techniques is essential. We analyze the results by applying two clustering techniques, Crossplotting, and k-means, in filtered data. In particular, we use structure-oriented filtered seismic data before calculating seismic attributes. We use a migrated section of the Buzios field from the Brazilian pre-salt in the Santos Basin. We find that combining filtering and clustering techniques can improve salt identification.
