The purpose of this work was to estimate the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) and to determine the crop coefficient (Kc) of Typha latifolia in constructed wetlands. The experiment used two horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HFCWs) cultivated with T. latifolia. Each HFCW received 50 L of secondary effluent daily, resulting in 3.2 days of nominal hydraulic retention time (disregarding effects of evapotranspiration and precipitation). In order to determine the ETc, water mass balance of the HFCWs was performed. In this analysis, ETc was considered equal to the difference between the inflow (secondary effluent + precipitation) and the outflow. The Kc was calculated using ETc and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) data (Kc = ETc/ETo). The results showed that 7-day average ETc varied dramatically within the range of 4.9–20.0 mm day−1, with a monthly average of 9.85 mm day−1. The mean monthly values of Kc varied from 2.03 to 3.68 (mean: 2.74). ETc is very important with respect to the HFCW water balance because it decreases effluent outflow considerably. Therefore, the findings of this work indicate that water losses caused by evapotranspiration should be considered when designing constructed wetlands.

F.EFFECT OF POTASSIUM FERTIGATION ON SOIL AND STRAWBERRY YIELD 2 ABSTRACT Proper irrigation management associated with appropriate plant nutrition leads to higher yield gain and better physiochemical properties of the fruit. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of fertigation with different irrigation levels and distinct concentrations of potassium on soil and strawberry yield. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse and strawberries were grown in beds. The treatments were arranged in a randomized split-plot experimental design with four replicates. Treatments consisted of five irrigation levels (125%, 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% water requirement of the crop) and three doses of potassium fertilization applied to the subplots (0, 300 and 900 kg ha-1 cycle-1). Potassium fertigation increased electrical conductivity and reduced pH in the soil solution. The ion effect promoted by potassium as a function of water regimes affected the strawberry yield and the physiochemical characteristics of fruits. The recommended dose of potassium to the strawberry in association with water applied in excess promote higher crop yield. Keywords: fertigation, Fragaria L, soil solution extractor.

FOR VEGETABLE CROP IRRIGATION 2 ABSTRACT In vegetable crop production the need for irrigation can be constant, and the water used must present good quality. After adequate treatment, domestic wastewater (DW) can be a viable and safe option of water for reuse. This work evaluated the efficiency of a simplified DW treatment system composed of a biological filter bed and a solar concrete disinfection reactor for reuse in vegetable crop irrigation. The system was installed at the School of Agronomic Science-FCA, Unesp, Botucatu-SP. In the reactor, depths of 10, 15 and 20 cm were tested. The solar disinfection in the reactor resulted in a treated effluent with quality in accordance with the threshold established by the World Health Organization for unrestricted irrigation (fecal coliforms ≤ 1,000 NMP 100 mL-1) after four hours of solar exposure. Considering pH, EC and TDS parameters, the DW treated can be classified as “none restriction” use for irrigation according to the classification proposed by FAO. With the average results of N, P and K concentrations in the treated DW, its nutritional potential for vegetable crop production was estimated as: 525.6 kg m3 ha-1 year-1 to N, 175.2 kg m3 ha-1 year-1 to P and 521.9 kg m3 ha-1 year-1 to K. Keywords: agricultural reuse, biological filter bed, solar disinfection, sewage.
This study evaluated the effect of hydraulic retention time on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) removal in an intermittently aerated constructed wetlands. Two horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands were used: one without aeration and the other aerated intermittently (1 hour with aeration/7 hours without aeration). Both systems were evaluated treating domestic wastewater produced synthetically. The flow rate into the two CWs was 8.6 L day-1 having a hydraulic retention time of 3 days. The results show that the intermittently aerated constructed wetland were highly efficient in removing COD (98.25%), TN (83.60%) and total phosphorus (78.10%), while the non-aerated constructed wetland showed lower efficiencies in the removal of COD (93.89%), TN (48.60%) and total phosphorus (58.66). These results indicate, therefore, that intermittent aeration allows the simultaneous occurrence of nitrification and denitrification processes, improving the removal of TN in horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands. In addition, the use of intermittent aeration also improves the performance of constructed wetlands in removing COD and total phosphorus.

EFFECTS OF VINASSE APLICATION ON SOIL FERTILITY 2 ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of vinasse application on soil fertility characteristics. A monitoring study of soil fertility parameters was conducted in a farm fertirrigated with vinasse, located in the state of São Paulo, over the period from 2012 to 2017. Mineralogical and soil metal concentration information was reported. Significant alterations in the chemical properties of the soil over time were observed, being the vinasse application one of the factors that influenced the variation of the soil characteristics, combined with environmental factors and agricultural management. The base saturation decreased on average from 64 to 40% between 2012 and 2017, respectively, while the mean annual volume of vinasse was 188 ± 31 m3 ha-1. The increasing trend in the years for the parameter aluminum saturation was remarkable and the pH values were around 5. Although the adoption of vinasse application in soils provides the availability of nutrients and water, it is recommended that the monitoring and control of soil quality be performed at all times maintaining, consequently, its fertility and the sustainability of sugarcane production. Palavras-chave: Radiação solar; Desinfecção; Águas residuárias SOLAR DISINFECTION: A SOLUTION OF LOW COST FOR WASTE WATER TREATMENT ABSTRACTIn the last decades, many studies have shown the efficiency of UV rays in the removal of pathogens from water. Solar radiation has an important component of UV radiation which affects the DNA chains of the microorganisms causing the loss of its biological activity resulting in reproduction incapacity and cell death. There are several models and ways to carry out solar disinfection. In brief, the system consists of a container which allows water exposure to solar radiation. For so, it might be used either PET or glass bottles, concrete containers, reactors, etc. These characteristics explain its low costs of installation and maintenance and, therefore, makes this technology suitable to be adopted by developing countries and/or low-income rural communities. SODIS is, therefore, a great alternative for regions with higher UV radiation incidence, where are located most part of the developing countries. Besides being an inexpensive and simple technology, SODIS does not produce toxic byproducts.
