Procurando analisar os instrumentais disponíveis para a cenografia na contemporaneidade, e observando momentos da história da encenação teatral, o texto apresenta três paradigmas principais: a abordagem da arte como representação mimética, a abordagem da arte como linguagem e a abordagem da arte voltada para o processo de percepção do espectador.
A partir de questões levantadas nas recentes edições das Quadrienais de Praga e das experiências artísticas e de pesquisa do autor, o texto trata de algumas possíveis definições dos conceitos de cenografia, performance, performatividade e teatralidade, buscando estabelecer distinções e aproximações entre as artes cênicas e as artes visuais, principalmente no campo da escultura. Para tanto são analisadas questões levantadas por autores como Rosalind Krauss e Josette Féral, entre outros, pertinentes às concepções culturalmente construídas destes campos e conceitos, bem como aos modos de pensar o fazer e os processos criativos destas áreas. Voltado para uma abordagem do pensamento do fazer artístico, a parir das experiências e pesquisas do autor, traz noções como a imagina ção material, a partir de Gaston Bachelard, e de operatividade, conceito proposto pelo próprio autor, aproximando-as de colocações específicas do campo do vídeo levantadas por Phillipe Dubois e outros autores.
